Interiors in red, white, and blue

Monday is independence day here in the states, which usually means lots of yummy cookouts, days at the beach, and fireworks! Have an awesome holiday!

A great, fail-safe way to mix patterns is to do it monochromatically. This red bed is a beauty!

I adore this real bedroom from a Baltimore apartment.  The exposed brick and the blue go together really well. Love that dresser too!

  • Lovely apartments from my future city

Lovely apartments from my future city

As some of you might already know, in August I am moving to DC because my boyfriend will be attending GWU in the fall to get his masters. While I grew up in MD, I only ever went to DC for school field trips, so I don’t really know much about the different neighborhoods. So yesterday before attending Manvi from Mochatini’s fabulous tabletop decorating how-to party, which I’ll be sharing pics from later, I drove around and explored some recommended neighborhoods. I checked out Columbia Heights, Shaw, Foggy Bottom, Dupont, Silver Spring (MD suburb), and Capitol Hill. It’s ultimately going to come down to the $$/space ratio. Anyway, enough of that – here are some fab. DC apartments…

  • Making industrial style furnishings work for you

Making industrial style furnishings work for you

So a reader wrote me recently with a great find – this industrial metal and leather chair – but she needed some inspiration on how to balance it in her space. So I’ve rounded up a collection of spaces that are either very industrial or nod to the industrial style, so she can get some ideas on how to successfully incorporate it into her space. Any ideas/tips for her?

    Here is the chair

Industrial interiors are often characterized by minimalist decor, a cool palette – a lot of grays, and materials such as brick, stone, metal, and glass. I think the key here would be to introduce the chair in a room where one or all of these characteristics are present. It doesn’t need to be completely industrial, but add a few industrial elements to balance out the chair. Whether it be a metal lamp, a steel file cabinet, or bare floors.

This interior is very industrial and takes it’s inspiration from a lab. There are lots of objects that could be paired with the chair to balance it in the space.

The palette in this dining room is very industrial – browns and grays, which visually supports the metal industrial lighting fixture.

Metal bins and open shelves ad an industrial touch.

The chair would look great in this workspace decorated with old wire hangers and baskets.
    via NSK Wood

The chair would also look at home behind this antique industrial table used as a desk.

All of the above work spaces would be great fits for the chair.

Metal lighting fixtures and an industrial cupboard used as a credenza – all in cool grays, create a factory atmosphere.

This dining room is a good example of how to mix industrial furnishings in with other styles. The metal chairs and traditional wood pedestal table work together because decor is kept spare and minimal.

More environments where I could see the chair working.

This space is not very industrial, but the minimal coffee table and bare floors would balance out the metal and leather of the chair.

  • An amazing mid-century modern home mixed with victorian glamour

An amazing mid-century modern home mixed with victorian glamour

    Something yummy for you…
    from Loft Life Magazine

“Charoonkit Thahong’s New York loft mixes Hollywood regency with mid-century modern overtones to create a space that celebrates good design. Some gems include the 1969 VP Globe lamp by Verner Panton, the Fortuny Moda lamp, the Knoll Tulip armless chairs and the oh-so-fun black Victorian love-seat. Thahong, an art director for R/GA, has managed to infuse warmth into the otherwise over-sized, industrial space (located in Hell’s Kitchen) adding subtle touches of glamour to finish off the look. It’s proof that life without walls doesn’t mean sticking to only one aesthetic; Thahong’s space is fit for both Charles Eames and Marie Antoinette!”

    …swoon…

If you live in a loft, open floor plan, or studio, book cases without a solid back allow light through but create a divider.

    ..a pretty corner…

Here’s a few pics from a tribeca loft, also as seen in Loft Life magazine

What do you think of the curtain divider with artwork displayed on it like a wall?

  • Amazing worked in and lived in artist lofts

Amazing worked in and lived in artist lofts

A reader requested a post on artist lofts – live/work spaces way back in October. Shamefully, I’m just getting to that now. There are so many great examples out there that I’m going to have to save some for future posts.

Here are some good examples of real spaces. Even if you don’t have a loft, maybe you can still find some inspiration.

    Great dining/kitchen area!

The above is from a loft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – an artsy neighborhood I lived in for a year back in 2006/2007.

Even with the exposed brick wall and factory-style windows, homey elements like the houseplants, pictures, and rug make the space more than liveable.

I’m not a fan of cowhide rugs or of bull fighting, but this bedroom is a good example of how loft dwellers can make an industrial space cozier- notice the room divider on the left

This is the area of the loft carved out to be office space.

The loft above is actually for sale in Pawtucket, RI.

I really like the look of lofts but I don’t know if I’d be happy living in one as I tend to like small, cozy spaces and being able to shut myself in a room alone. How about you have you lived in a loft, did you like it? If not, do you think you’d like loft living?
