    Living with Less

As most of you know, clutter can make your overall home decor design seem a little off. If you feel like the amount of things in your home are not showing the true value of the design that you want in your home, maybe it’s time to live with less.
Decluttering can be a huge task that seems quite overwhelming, especially for those who have a hard time letting things go. My suggestion for those who are struggling is to do one room! It’s amazing how one room can boost your motivation and really show you what decluttering can do.
First, start with a plan! What is your style, your color scheme, and your purpose for the room. Now take everything out of the room. If you need to paint or do any big changes, now is the time. Once the room is exactly how you want it empty, add one piece at a time.

Just because you want a simpler room, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! Make sure you add your personality in it, but do it in a way that doesn’t involve a lot of small pieces that will need to be cleaned, dusted, moved, and rearranged later.

You might be surprised when you feel like the room is complete, how many pieces you have left! Here’s the decision you’ll have to make. Either get rid of everything you didn’t put back in the room, or go through it and decide what to keep and what to throw or give away. But whatever you do – don’t put it back in the room you just finished!
For rooms that require a lot more things to be kept. Consider closed storage with drawers and cabinets that you can’t see through. It will create that sense of less clutter while maintaining the items you need to live.

    Perfectly polished transitional interiors

    Traditional interiors with modern appeal

Since earlier in the week we shared some bohemian design inspiration, I thought we’d contrast that with sharing inspiration from my favorite style, transitional. What I love so much about transitional interiors is the focus on line – usually clean elegant lines that aren’t busy or ornate. I also NEED a clutter-free space, and transitional interiors are always well curated and clutter-free.

Transitional interiors can be warm and inviting through the use of meaningful objects or art and photographs.

Transitional interiors don’t have to be all white, I just happen to be drawn to ones that are.  I’m also a fan of a pop of color like these accent pillows.

A great transitional interiors is adorned with objects that have meaning to the occupant or are functional.

I like the emphasis on quality materials over quantity of stuff. Everything was created and selected with care.

This space is a little mid century mod but I think it could also go transitional.  I love the mix of textures and simple patterns. It’s elegant but doesn’t take itself too seriously.

You don’t have to hide your possessions – group collections together, like books or architectural prints, ceramics, etc.

  • Create a staycation worthy home!

Daydreaming of a vacation but your budget says no? How about a staycation instead! Now it won’t be easy because it comes with a lot of planning and preparation, but the reward is totally worth it!
Step One: Declutter EVERYTHING! Spend a day in each room going through every single item you own. Fill boxes with things that need to leave that you can either donate or at the end of the week, host a huge yard sale and make some money off of your hard work.

Step Two: Pick one room that you’ve always wanted to update and do it! This one doesn’t have to be a budget buster. Fresh paint is cheap, or maybe a few new chairs you found at a yard or estate sale. A fresh outlook can really change your perspective.

Step Three: Do a deep clean. Spend a weekend or treat yourself and pay someone else to clean with the money you made from selling your clutter! Get a nice fresh and clean smell throughout that house!

Step Four: If you are like me your office is at home. Either put it away, or close the doors! A staycation means putting aside work to enjoy your stay there.

  • Spring Cleaning in Winter

    Spring Cleaning in Winter

I’m not sure what it is about the new year and cleaning but it feels like spring cleaning in here! It might be the sense of purging things I don’t need as a way to get a fresh start, but whatever it is, I love it.
I take everything off the shelves and out of the cabinets, reevalute when the last time I used it and if it’s worth keeping and freshen up the shelves. Here’s some inspiration if you are feeling the winter cleaning buzz:
One of my favorite things to do is sometimes rearrange some stuff. Move one basket you had in one room to another one. It’s amazing how refreshing it can feel simply by being moved. But, if you have lots of random items which you need to move out or rearrange, you can take advice from simplymaids sydney and they always go an amazing job.

  • Keeping Small Spaces Beautiful

    Keeping Small Spaces Beautiful

You would think that having a small flat or studio would mean minimalistic decoration and the end to all clutter forever. But like most people, you probably find yourself holding onto stuff which you can’t justify discarding. I believe that if you have space, you’ll fill it, so one has to be careful to remember to purge, purge, purge, or you will run out of space, no matter how much you have.

This is easier said than done however, especially if your sweetums or the kiddies hate to throw things away or donate them.  Here are a few rules I follow to try to keep clutter at bay. Here are a few rules from Glimmr Cardiff that I follow to try to keep clutter at bay.
    Be brutal

Home decoration is one of those areas where you have to be ruthless no matter how big or small the job.
The fact is that you are going to be living in the space you are decorating so you have to be absolutely sure that what you are bringing into your home is what you want AND has either a function or very sentimental value.

Keep it to a minimum or keep it hidden in plain sight.

Baskets and bins are my mantra if you have a lot of small toys or tools that need to be kept accessible. Open shelves are great for accessibility but they can start looking messy very fast.  An easy way to remedy that is matching baskets or totes.

    Use color decisively

In a small space, every color and item has more impact than it does in a more spacious abode.  It is a myth that dark colors make a small space seem smaller. What makes a space seems smaller is high contrast, because of it’s play with perspective. Your can use that idea to your advantage though if you want to create depth in a room. Painting three walls a light color and saving the last one for something rich deepens the sense of space.
Nowadays, space is at a premium especially in large cities. They say that less is more and there is no reason why this can’t also be true for making a small flat or studio a delight to live in.
Large pieces of art make a space seem larger than it is and mirrors work wonders for giving the illusion of increased space.
    Keep it slick

There is nothing wrong with clutter if you like the crammed-and-cosy look.
However, if you want to create space, turf out the unwanted odds and ends immediately. I always feel amazing after dropping off boxes at good will!

To keep it simple work on one set of items at a time to stop you from feeling overwhelmed. After all, de-cluttering is not just a physical task but emotional too. It is tough discarding objects which and quieting that voice that always says “but I may use it one day…”.
Once you are de-cluttered, some cleaning tips will help you along. Clean as you go each day so that you can not only relax in comfort in your space but you don’t have a huge job at the end of the week.  Even cleaning a studio flat can take days if left too long.
With less clutter, 15 minutes of daily cleaning will be a breeze.
