    Cozy Cottages: Light or Dark?

    Cozy Cottages

Just the word cottages makes one think of being curled up by the fire with a great book, or of lazy mornings at the beach front.  How do you prefer your cozy cottages – in light or dark?  Beach breeze coming through an open window or thick wool blankets and crackling bacon?

    Light Cottages

Light cottages often feature rustic charms like white walls, often shiplap, and bare time-worn floors. Window treatments are kept to a minimal to let as much light in as possible.

Nothing in a cottage like this screams “new.”  Woods have an aged patina and everything is full of character and charm.

    Dark Cottages

Snow and wind outside your door?  If you are in a dark cottage that won’t bother you.  Layers of warmth in the means of blankets, deep cushioned armchairs, and firelight abound.

    cozy cottages

In dark cottages walls are usually painted in moody blues or grays.

    cozy cottages

    Lots of wood tones.

Heavier upholstery and textiles are also a mainstay of dark cottages.

  • Lake House Inspiration

    Lake House Inspiration

It’s the beginning of vacation time! The sun is finally out and getting some time off to enjoy it is everyone’s goal. As you know we’ve been renovating and redecorating our home and I can just imagine others doing the same for theirs or even they’re summer homes. Today I am showing off some Lake House inspiration:
When I think lake house, I think wood, rope, burlap, and blue!
A room with a view is a must have. Doesn’t matter if it’s a bedroom, sunroom, kitchen, living space, as long as it has a view!

I love little touches of water life and the wrought iron makes me think of lighthouses!
Cozy rooms and bunk beds are definitely a must have in a summer lake house!
A simple cottage kitchen would be a lovely getaway space.
What are your must haves for a lake house?

    Escape to the beach

Winters in Maryland the past few years have not been typical. Cold, windy, and wet seems to be the theme. It just has me thinking…why don’t I live in a tropical climate?

  • Escape to a historic garden home in the UK

Escape to a historic garden home in the UK

Right now they are repointing the brick in my apartment building, and the never-ending grinding noise is UNbearable. What I wouldn’t do for a little silence!  At least I can virtually escape.  One thing I like to do is do property searches for country chalets, manors, and garden cottages throughout the UK and Europe.  I’m always able to find some charming little (and big) property that looks like it’s been plucked right out of Pride & Prejudice.  I just delve into the photos and try to imagine what it’d be like to spend the summer there. I used Savills today, and they have an amazing array of dream properties.

Here are two properties I discovered this afternoon.

The first, Clapton Mill, used to be a Paper Mill, and has STUNNING grounds, and even a room in the home where you can view the waterfall that running under the home.

    Dreamy.

Another gem I found is a Georgian property in a secluded village setting…just the description makes me feel a little better!

I’d spend most of my time outside and in this bright studio

I’d take my high tea out in the garden…I don’t know how proper that is though…

What do you think of these homes – how long would you like to retreat in them?

  • A charming and magical lakefront, mountainside village in Austria

A charming and magical lakefront, mountainside village in Austria

The village of Hallstatt, in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, was an amazing day trip Chris and I took while we were in Austria. The village is built almost vertically onto the mountain, and seems as though it might almost slide into the lake.

Hallstatt has some amazing history, which explains the village’s precarious perch: “…this secluded and inhospitable landscape nevertheless counts as one of the first places of human settlement because of the rich sources of natural salt, which have been mined for thousands of years, originally in the shape of hearts owing to the use of an antler pick.[3] Some of Hallstatt’s oldest archaeological finds, such as a shoe-last celt, date back to around 5500 BC. In 1846 Johann Georg Ramsauer discovered a large prehistoric cemetery close by the current location of Hallstatt. Ramsauer’s work at the Hallstatt cemeteries continued until 1863, unearthing more than 1000 burials…. In addition, one of the first blacksmith sites was excavated there. Active trade and thus wealth allowed for the development of a highly developed culture, which, after findings in the Salzberghochtal, was named the Hallstatt culture. This lasted from approximately 800 to 400 BC.” via Wikipedia

We arrived at the town via ferry

    Town square

    A view from the cemetery

Tiny cobbled paths lead you up the mountain

Like most good views, it’ll cost you a bit of a hike…but it’s worth it!

    The cemetery

The Beinhaus (“Bone house”), Hallstatt, Austria – Because there is limited space in the town cemetery, people are only buried for 10-15 years. After that, they are removed from the grave, the skulls left out in the sun to bleach, were painted by the family and stacked in the bone house, therefore opening up space in the cemetery.  Now that cremation is an accepted practice, the Beinhaus serves mainly as a tourist attraction and important piece of history.

It dates back to the twelfth century AC. There are over 1200 skulls in the chapel, of them 610 have been painted in flowery designs, they are neatly stacked in rows along with next of kin and have the date of death written on them.  This tradition began in 1720 AD. The last skull to go into the Beinhaus was in 1995. It is directly beside the cross. The woman died 1983; it was her last request to be stored in the Beinhaus (Bone house).

    Not a bad view, right?

As we leave the town via Ferry As always – thanks to my boyfriend Chris for these gorgeous photos.
