Fresh and beautiful bathrooms for Summertime

In the winter, my bathroom is where I go to enjoy a long hot bath after being out in the cold. In the summer, summertime bathrooms is where one goes for a cool, refreshing shower after a hot sticky day. To create a cool retreat, it helps to keep your summer bathroom as clutter free as possible.  Keep  reflective surfaces clean, as well as and lighting fixtures (Make sure they all have working bulbs, as well).  Since there are more hours of daylight in the summer, it is especially important to keep lighting bright and as close to outdoor light as possible.

Keep colors bright and cheery, or choose simple, crisp whites.

Remember that refreshing your bathroom can be as simple as replacing cabinet hardware or installing a new faucet.

Update anything scented in your bathroom from spicy or musky to light scents, either floral or clean.  Heat activates scent, so you don’t want to overdo it.

Interior designer Sasha Emerson adds an undeniable sense of ease and comfort to her liveable interiors. They all have a quality of warmth and family, and with character to boot! The four below showcase the home of Emerson herself.  You can see and read the entire article at Country Living.

Love the gray of the walls with the tan console and headboard.

Below are some of my favorite spaces from her website.

    Small bathroom ideas

I think it’s just my fate to always have a small bathroom.  Even the master bathroom in our home is small, even for a regular bathroom….  We make do though, and the best solution I’ve found is to use vertical space to create storage options.  We have a cabinet installed over the toilet, and the towel rods are installed on the back of the door.  Here are some more small bathroom ideas :
You can find cubbies and shelves in all sizes nowadays, and don’t overlook even the narrowest sliver of wall as a possibility for storage. If you can maintain a clean organized look with your items out in the open, open shelves will be fine.  If not, look for cabinets with sliding doors or drawers.
If you have a little extra space that you can put in a built in, that’s always the way to go if you can  swing it. This space looks especially sophisticated because the crisp lines of the toilet really matches the style of the moulding and shelves.

I really like all of the artwork in this bathroom. The shelves our great too – just make sure they aren’t deeper than the toilet tank or it could make visits to it a bit uncomfortable!
I wouldn’t use the built-in shelves in this bathroom for books – but the bathroom sure looks cute!

    LOVE the perfume shelf!

Making use of the storage you already have may be the best solution! adding a shelf to your door and finding the right storage accessories for your under the sink space can add a ton of storage solutions if you are lacking any extra square footage.
Organizing junkies will love these little stick-on bins…myself included!

Colorful Decor: Your home will thank you

    Colorful Decor

It’s officially summer! I thought I’d seek out some color and light and some examples of what color can really do for your home. This is great for those who love white walls, live in rental that you can’t paint, hate to paint, or just have a love for accessories and changing them up. Sometimes a blank white canvas of room is a little intimidating and you might even not know where to start. Bringing in simple neutral furniture is a great start so that it can grow with you while you figure out what you really want in your space. Then, observe what colors you are consistently drawn to, and seek out colorful decor and small home goods in those hues. Pillows, lamps, and vases are a great way to start.

Colors change with season and what’s in style which goes the same with patterns. Instead of repainting all the time, try adding a little touch of color with some accessories and home decor around the house. This can give you that feel of color and texture that you might be looking for.

The great news with using home decor for your color is that it’s really easy to switch it up. Add a bold cushion or curtain depending on the season…if it’s a color you can’t live with permanently, you can swap it out easily.

You can also do this with furniture pieces, like the blue table in the photo above. If you decided you didn’t want blue anymore it would be a simple fix to change out just the side table and pillow. Another option would be to repaint that one piece! Since it’s smaller it wouldn’t be such a daunting task as repainting an entire room…

Want to go a little further than accessories for your room? You can frame wallpaper or paint a canvas to hang on the wall or bring in a spot color chair. When you want to change it up later you can switch out the chair to a different room or paint a new canvas.

You don’t have to limit yourself – it might even be easier to switch out one piece like the rug to make the room look different. Don’t be afraid to mix it up a little and make your room one that you love walking in to.

    Elegant Dining Rooms

Lush velvet chairs evoke glamour and comfort, charcoal walls and a gold pendant add edge.

Fun artwork and modern foil wallpaper keep this space from being stuffy.

A circular table is instantly cozier than a rectangular one, while the details on that amazing settee scream sophistication.

This dining room is a hybrid home library and eating space.  Not a conventional pairing, but I love it.

A velvet upholstered banquette and a Saarinen table?  Yes please!

Modern traditional dining furniture in an industrial loft makes for quite a cool space for dining.

  • A New Jersey Victorian goes from dark and stuffy to bright and bold in this house tour

A house tour that shows historic homes can be fresh and modern

It’s hard not to be distracted by the fun and colorful approach BHDM design took when designing the 128 year old Victorian that was once stuffy and dark.  What really caught my eye were the amazing suzani upholstered chairs in bright blues and pinks.

I love this wingback chair – the colors and floral pattern is so pretty.

Talk about a brave commitment.  Navy lacquered walls really make jaws drop in this sitting room.  I feel like no color was left unused in this jewel toned room.

The dining room is probably my least favorite.  The wallpaper is too busy for me.  But I thought it was worth sharing.

I’m sure painting the old hardwood floors a glossy chevron wasn’t an easy choice either.  Do you think it was a good decision?

  • Casual Elegance: Work from the Mandarina Interior Design Studio

It’s been awhile since I’ve landed on a design portfolio from and interior design studio that I’ve wanted to share.  So, I was excited when I found Mandarina Interior Design Studio.  Yes, the images below show these homes on their best, most tidy days, but they serve as beautiful inspiration.

LOVE this, and I try to use love sparingly in posts.  Our master bedroom is painted lavender and has an oriental rug in it, and I really like how the reds and blues pair with the lavender.  These walls are more pink but you still get the same effect between the colors.

Yes, that wallpaper is super cool – but so are the marble tile floors.  Wowza.

Those curtains and blue wall color with that vintage over-dyed rug?  Genius.  And painting the chairs white helps balance the wood tones of the parquet floors, wood fireplace surround, and traditional wood dining table.  I need to be bolder and start using more jewel tones, I tend to play it safe with pastels.

I’m envious of those leaded windows.  The modern Suzani upholstered bench cushion and graphic area rug set off the classic moulding and old wood floors.

Many times I have gotten questions for advise on how to deal with a lot of wood moulding and wainscoting.  Homeowners want to preserve the historic integrity of their home, but also don’t want to feel like they live in a drab outdated home.  This foyer strikes a lovely balance between modern and original by keeping the floors, banisters, and stairs in their traditional wood tones, while painting the wainscoting a fresh white.

I know it’s very unrealistic, but wow I love how clutter-free this place is!  I hate walking in my front door to a pile of mail, shoes in the doorway, and a laptop bag on the floor.  (I doubt my husband is reading this, but just incase)

Soothing lavender is a great color for a bedroom.  Surprisingly, my husband suggested it for ours and we both love it.

Now that I have a baby I’m a sucker for sweet nurseries.  This color is close to the light blue we chose for Leo’s nursery.  The playful pattern of the roman shade is perfect.

The wallpaper in this nursery is so sweet.  Yellow is such a nice, cheerful color for the little ones.
