Dressing Rooms: Tips for creating a superbly glamorous dressing room

    Dressing Room inspiration

Jane, a Decorology reader, wrote me asking for inspiration for a 9×9 room she wants to turn into a “fit for a star dressing room.” So I’ve done my best to compile some super glamorous dressing rooms. I’ve also found a few “glam dressing room” essentials and where to find them. Even if you don’t have a dressing room, I hope you enjoy this eye candy!

One of my favorite dressing rooms – the dressing room of JCrew Jenna Lyons as seen in Domino.

Another one I like -I guess I really like the windows with natural light, which is good for makeup.

I think the mornings would be easier to face with a beautiful wall of beautiful shoes.

A dressing room is a great place to try out that bold wallpaper or paint color you’ve been eyeing as it’s a more private, smaller space.

Here are some items I would use to create a starlet dressing room.

Top left: A staple of any glam interior – a chaise or settee. This one is from Montauk sofa.
Top right: Chandelier, like this one from Graham and Greene
Center: A tufted ottoman, this one is from Serena and Lily
Bottom left: A mirrored vanity is quintessential glam. This one is from Graham and Greene
Bottom right: A pretty little table like this one from Oomph Online

  • Proof wall to wall carpeting can be gorgeous

Proof wall to wall carpeting can be gorgeous

Growing up in an old farmhouse, we always had hardwood floors, so it would be hard for me to go to carpet I think.  That being said, wall to wall carpet does have it’s advantages.  Nothing beats it’s coziness underfoot, and when you have an infant who spends his day on the floor, under butt.  Also, if you live in a rental, wall to wall carpeting might be what your stuck with.  So fear not, or rejoice – wall to wall carpeting can be just as gorgeous as hardwood floors.

Wall to wall sisal carpet paired with the black walls looks so sophisticated!

If I were to ever go the carpet route I would want something with a modern texture in a neutral shade.

In this neutral bedroom the carpeting adds another layer of rich texture.

Loving these grays with the pops of yellow.

How dreamy and lush is this dressing room walk-in closet with diamond patterned carpet?

Pretty pretty gold bamboo bed frame with a minimal geometric patterned carpet in gray keeps things crisp.

  • Decorating with Velvet for a touch of luxe

Decorating with Velvet for a touch of luxe

I’m definitely not into frilly and fussy when it comes to my home decor, but sometimes a girl just needs a little luxury in her life.  Especially as the temperatures drop and we spend more times indoors, it’s nice to have your home feeling a little more indulgent and comfortable.

Enter velvet, beautiful color, amazing texture, and when done right just the right amount of chic.

Here are some examples of velvet used in decorating that I love.

How beautiful is that blue velvet chair?

More is more with a chesterfield in velvet and a faux fur throw to boot.

For just a small touch of glamor try a velvet ottoman.

Really scared of going overboard?  With velvet pillow you can’t!

This green velvet ottoman on the pink rug is a fun combination, and keeps the room from taking itself so seriously.

If you’re into more is more, nothing is more luxurious than a velvet headboard in royal navy!

Do you have any velvet in your home?

  • Ali Cayne’s light-filled family friendly NYC townhouse

Ali Cayne’s light-filled family friendly NYC townhouse

I was pretty darn excited to run across this house tour on Domino magazine because I’ve seen and featured rooms from it individually in previous posts (her bathroom is one of my favorites)! Ali Cayne is a restauranteur who moved to a downtown Manhattan townhouse and took the opportunity to update it to be a warm and inviting family home for her and her five children.

Ali really made her subway tiles pop by using a dark grout (darker grout also hides stains better than white).

    What an oven!
Open shelves full of beautiful dishes looks like a chef’s delight!
I love the light gray cabinets with the brass cup pulls.
Not only would I be thrilled to have a dressing room, but a dressing room white built ins and herringbone hardwood floors?
The Greenwich Village townhouse has amazing bones, and the renovations really are a breath of fresh air.
I don’t usually love accent walls, but I love a dark accent wall in a master bedroom.
This dining room is heaven.  A white gallery wall, and beautiful dining table and chairs.
I like the glam version of a sawhorse desk.  The giant inspiration board is great too.
Ali’s workspace is also light filled and features built in bookshelves.
This is the bathroom I’ve posted before.  It is an all time favorite.

  • Luxury Bedroom Wish List

    Luxury Bedroom Wish List

The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house,  not only for it’s obvious function as a place to sleep or store your clothes and shoes, but the role it plays a private haven or sanctuary away from everything else ( remember when you were a teenager!).Ultimately a bedroom should be relaxing, comfortable and a little self-indulgent, after all it’s your bedroom and need reflect only your tastes and personality, with maybe the exception of your partner if applicable! But just for the sake of self-indulgence here are the top 5 contemporary furniture essentials for the perfectly luxurious bedroom….

    The Walk in Wardrobe
It’s hard to imagine any woman who hasn’t fantasied about a custom fitted walk in closet to house all of her clothes and shoes, equipped with full length mirrors and a dressing table (yes I’m thinking Sex & the City style!) Although many of us may not have the space to have essentially what is a bedroom within a bedroom; a great alternative is fitted wardrobes with customized accessories to organize all your things along with mirrored sliding doors to make the most out the space available.

    King-sized Upholstered Bed

I used to think King-sized beds were unnecessary. But now, I find myself liking more and more space to stretch out when I sleep. And nothing is more luxurious than a fluffy upholstered headboard.

    An over-sized floor length mirror.
A generously sized mirror casually leaning against the wall adds an instant sumptuousness to any space.  It’s a great way to reflect candle light, and add some romance.  It’s also the best way to make sure your look is pulled together before leaving for the day!

    Flueless Fire
I grew up with a fire always going in the winters, so I’d be happy with any fireplace. But, there is nothing like a flueless fire to warm up a contemporary bedroom and provide a fantastic focal point.  Not only do they keep the room pretty toasty the glass protector in front never gets too hot to touch making them a health and safety dream!

    Appropriate Bedroom Lighting

There’s nothing I dread more than harsh and cold overhead lighting.  The bedroom, more than any other room in the home, demands dimmer, warmer lighting.  If you have an overhead fixture, it must be on a dimmer switch.  In fact, I’d like every light switch in my home to have a dimmer switch.
Since your be is often the focal point, it’s especially important that your bedside lamps, whether matching or not, be beautiful and give off soft light (though still provide enough light to read by).

    Vanity
Another glamor girl must have, a vanity, or dressing table, makes your otherwise dreary morning routine feel a little more like pampering. Make sure your dressing table has ample storage options for cosmetics, whether through the use of drawers or pretty baskets or containers, a luxe chair or stool, and a mirror.  This is one place where you want to make sure you have access to good lighting.  Strip lights or bulbs along the sides of the mirror are better than overhead.  It helps to place your vanity near an outlet so you can use your hot tools or other electronics while getting ready.

What are your must-haves or on your luxury bedroom wishlist?

  • A master bedroom turned into an amazing closet/dressing room

A master bedroom turned into an amazing closet/dressing room

God bless this woman. She convinced her husband to turn their master bedroom into a walk in closet, and the downstairs guest room became their master bedroom.

    I’m jealous.

The desk is from ikea – the lamp a thrift find

She stores her jewelry in chef’s pinch dishes

The only thing I would have is maybe a vanity in place of the desk

  • A house tour sure to become one of my all time favorites

A house tour sure to become one of my all time favorites

I discovered this Toronto home recently in an issue of the lovely Covet Garden magazine. It was love at first site. The cleanliness and colors are so peaceful and serene. Enjoy!

It must be so mind-cleansing to come home to this entryway so free of clutter

    Couldn’t agree more

The light blue they’ve used is just perfect

    Love the wallpaper

Most Toronto homes lack closets so they turned a spare bedroom into a dressing room

Love the invisible book shelf as a clean and simple nightstand. I could never keep mine so empty though…

    soooo pretty!

    What do you think?

  • The benefits of built-ins and fitted furniture done right

The benefits of built-ins and fitted furniture done right

There are many advantages to choosing fitted home furniture. One of the biggest advantages of this type of furniture is the amount of space that you can access compared with free-standing furniture. Many people are increasingly pressed for space in their homes, with items of furniture that are full to the brim. This means that any extra items that need to be stored often end up causing clutter on the floor or being left on the top of wardrobes and desks, getting covered in dust. This is of course impractical, as it leaves you with less surface area and also negatively impacts on the appearance of your home, making it look messy and uninviting.

    A Real Transformation
Fitted furniture, however, transforms the look of your home, making use of every inch of your room for storage, unlike free-standing furniture which will almost always leave huge, wasted spaces in comparison. With fitted home furniture, not only do you get to eliminate the excess clutter for a much cleaner, tidier appearance, but the furniture itself also makes your home look more seamless, with wardrobes that stretch from floor to ceiling. You benefit from furniture with smooth lines and no ugly gaps. This can be a particular issue when you are looking for furniture for a room that is of an awkward shape, for example one that has tricky alcoves or that is impeded by a sloping ceiling, the latter obviously a frequent issue for renovated attics.

Since I work from home, a nice home office is a must. When I finally settle down and decide to live somewhere for more than one year, I will definitely be investing in an awesome desk and shelf system. I LOVE built in bookshelves.

What a gorgeous entertainment room – rooms which are often so hard to make gorgeous!

If my closet were half this orderly and efficient I’d be a happy girl.

    Versatile Furniture
Fitted furniture can also be incredibly versatile. Remember that this type of furniture can be made to measure, meaning that you do not have to settle for the shape of furniture that you see on the manufacturer’s website! There are many fitted home furniture designers who can create ingenious solutions for your room so that space can be freed up in ways you never thought possible. This allows you to create a solution for each room so that not an inch of space is ever wasted in any part of your house. The space that becomes available as a result actually makes each room look bigger, along with being much more appealing due to the outstanding individual designs you can request on custom-made furniture.

A wide range of fitted furniture can be purchased, meaning that you can make your home look truly seamless by introducing the same style to different areas of your house, from bedrooms and box rooms to loft conversions and guest rooms.

What do you like about this house? Not like so much?

I LOVE the entryway. What a great space to see first thing when you walk in the door after work.

What do you think of wallpaper on the ceiling?

You may think all of these framed prints cost a fortune, but really all you need to accomplish this look are some basic frames, and then a used book of botanical or nature illustrations. Carefully remove the pages that you like and insert them in the frames!
