  • An old Portland Library turned into a beautiful home!

An old Portland Library turned into a beautiful home!

Jessica Helgerson Interior Design turns a former library into a client’s dream house.

The project was a complete remodel of the small public library in Portland’s Sellwood neighborhood.  It was then used as a church meeting hall.  The designers really wanted to preserve the feeling of the big open space of the library and converted it to a great room.

The remodel was kept traditional with modern decor and furnishings used as a nice contrast.
Jewel tones are also used via the furnishings and art.

Bookshelves were added throughout to keep in theme with the library.

The great room is comprised of the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
The art is by local Portland artists Anya Spielman and Jocelyn Rahm.

    How beautiful is that chair?

The ladder is a nice nod to the house’s original use as a library.

The entry and powder room was originally an open front porch that they enclosed.

The bedrooms were quite small so cabinetry was built in wherever possible.

    Bedroom Office Inspiration

Beautiful ways to have a home office in your bedroom

We finally hired a nanny 2 days a week so I can start getting back to work.  It is wonderful to have some help finally.  Working in the evenings after Leo went to bed has been taking it’s toll.  I love being back in my home office, but hubby works from home two days a week and there may be some days when we both need to work, but only have one desk available.  So we’ve been considering putting a desk in our bedroom for him to work from on the days he works from home.  Here are some office in the bedroom ideas I found.

You’ll notice one common characteristic of a successful desk in the bedroom is that it doesn’t try to be a standout statement piece.  It matches the bedroom’s existing style and looks like it belongs.
    via Home Portfolio

Another characteristic is that desks are either kept very minimal and clean, or they are treated like a piece of furniture one often finds in a bedroom, like a vanity or nightstand, and decorated with lamps and picture frames.

The desks chairs are also kept relatively inconspicuous.

I love this example because the desk actually has a computer on it, as I imagine 98% of all desks do!

  • How a chair can change a room.

How a chair can change a room.

It’s amazing how a simple thing like a chair can completely change the entire personality of a room. It can evoke a feeling of comfort or simply define a certain style you were going for.

So when you are thinking about the feeling, the style, and the look you are going for in a room, don’t think that a chair won’t make a difference. A chair can make all the difference!
  • Chairs that have caught my eye!

Chairs that have caught my eye!

I don’t know what it is about chairs, but they seem to catch my eye! I feel like they are an easy thing to switch out and although some are quite pricey, you can find great ones in any budget. They can create a cozy environment, add extra seating, or just give the room something special.
There’s something about a unique chair that gets me every time.
Even if it’s a chair that’s meant to not be seen! It adds a little something extra to the room.
They can be bold and make a statement.
Or tuck inside a special space, but still be beautifully designed.
Almost every room can use a chair. You can’t say that for most items in each room of your house!
What kind of chairs do you love the most?
  • Make it Interesting!

    Make it Interesting!

It is so easy to just pick a chair that fits into our style or color scheme, but why not pick something that stands out a bit. Maybe something interesting?
Let it stand out from all your other furniture and catch your eye.
Give it a little personality with a bright color!
Let it stand out from the rest of your room by picking something that shines on it’s own.
Pick a one of a kind by finding a chair that could be updated to your liking!

  • Rooms That Instantly Calm

    Rooms That Instantly Calm

Sometimes you just want to walk into a room and feel instantly calm and relaxed. By the looks of these room, that is exactly how I am feeling:
I don’t know if it’s the clean look, the elegant drapes, or the cozy chair, but this room is definitely calming to me.

I would say most bathrooms are difficult to make serene since it tends to get a cold hard feeling when you walk in. They can be beautiful and stunning but serene is a tough one to master.

I love the use of neutrals in a bedroom. It’s pleasing to the eye and calming to the heart. I also love when there isn’t that fear of playing with the darker neutrals in a bedroom. It is a place where you sleep, so darker colors are welcoming here.

My tip for a serene living area is to go with the mindset of simple. The less clutter, the less distraction, the more serene and comfortable.
Who wouldn’t want a calming bedroom for the baby? I can imagine this room with a cozy chair for rocking a little one to sleep.
    What makes you feel serene?
  • A Simple Chair can Change the Room!

A Simple Chair can Change the Room!

When decorating a room, I love to add a simple chair. There are so many advantages to having one, like an accent to tie the room together, extra seating, or to fill an empty space. They can add texture to an otherwise dull room.
They create a sense of comfort to a room.
They can provide personality and a pop of color.
It doesn’t matter what size the room is, there are so many styles of chairs you can easily find one to fit the space.
Even if you think a chair wouldn’t fit in, you’d be surprised it add’s a much needed character.

  • Adding some Old Charm

    Adding some Old Charm

As much as I love shiny, bright, clean, and new; there’s something to say about old charm. Here’s some inspiration of how I would bring in some old charm in my own home.

Between the home sign, the window decor, and the farmhouse sink, this screams old charm to me!
Using old furniture remodeled with newer design can give you that old world charm with a luxury touch.
Gathering around a large farmhouse table can do the trick! It doesn’t matter what style your kitchen is, a large wooden table fits in every decor.
Designer Tobi Tobin commissioned a new screen door for some Victorian charm.
A beautiful screen door brings back so many memories for me!
And finish it off with some rocking chairs or a swing on the front porch.
I hope these simple changes can bring you that old charm you are looking for!
  • Chairs That Make A Statement

I appreciate a room that is well thought out. Even a great color scheme can get me excited to see more! Other times, I just want to see something that I’ll swoon over, like a statement piece that isn’t just for looks, but usable too. Check out these chairs that are definitely doing that:

Sophistication and elegance come to mind for me with these. They are the perfect pair, yet they look so comfortable at the same time!
You may just see vintage style when you look at this, but in it’s setting it’s a perfect fit that stands out at the same time. This chair becomes a talking piece!
Struggling with a simple color palette and what something a little bold? Grab a pattern and a bright color and this space becomes desirable!
