Dark Bathrooms – What do you think?

I feel that over the past couple of years I’ve been seeing more and more dark bathrooms.  It definitely creates a feeling that’s elegant and chic, but is it something you would try in your home?

The mirrors reflect a lot of light in this bathroom.  Notice the picture hanging above the tub?  I always wonder in these situations if it really stays there or if it was just put there for the photo shoot…

I want to replace the vanity surface in our master bath, does anyone have a wood vanity like this?  Does it hold up well?

Painted glass coasters, ‘Floral Muse’ (set of 6)

Cream colored blossoms align precisely in a midnight garden. Asunta Pelaez hand-paints the motifs on the reverse side of glass panes, giving them a wonderful clarity. A traditional Cajamarca handicraft, the panes adorn a set of six beautiful coasters.

Wool cushion covers, ‘Mountains’ (pair)

The beauty of the Andean hills and valleys resonates in this pair of cushion covers. Designed by Cerapio Vallejo, the imagery is inspired by Inca topographic symbols. Vallejo preserves Ayacucho weaving traditions as he elaborates the covers on one of eight looms he constructed by hand. This work combines sheep wool and cotton, resulting in a pleasing texture; the covers feature a zipper closure.

Wrought iron candleholder, ‘Indian Grace’

Crafted by hand of finely finished wrought iron, this candleholder comes from Sharad Jain. It hangs on the wall to display two glowing candles.

Reclaimed wood photo frame, ‘Fond Memories’ (3×3)

Sameer and Sunil design this modern photo frame featuring bands of color with an antique finish. Making a statement for the preservation of the environment, the frame for a 3×3 photograph is crafted by hand with reclaimed mango wood, creating the illusion of using different pieces. Featuring a glass pane, the frame can stand on a shelf and can also hang on the wall.

Celebrating the 4th in Style!

Last summer I had the honor of guest blogging on 4th of July style for my good friends over at Bae Home, purveyors of AWESOME furnishings and decor based in San Francisco.  I was doubly honored when they asked me for some style tips to share with their readers this 4th, and here’s what I came up with

Loving the look of a framed flag. Displaying it in a frame is a chic way to keep it on display all year. Just make sure the stars are always kept in the upper left corner!

Versatile and beautiful…I have had these stools on my wishlist for the past 6 months. You get to choose between various leaf imprints, sage, banana, artichoke, eucalyptus, and more. They’re perfect for entertaining because they can serve as a stool or a side table.

Read the whole post over on the Bae Home blog!

Have a wonderful (and stylish) 4th of July everyone!

How to set up a room for a dinner party

A dinner party is a fantastic way to invite your friends into your home for some delicious food and great conversation. Now that I finally have a real dining room and a patio, I suspect Chris and I will be doing some more entertaining. Setting up for the party is half the fun!  Tablescaping and lighting often take the backseat to food, drink, and music, but can make just as much impact.  Picking out great accessories like table runners, pillows, and lighting is nice way to change up your scenery without breaking the budget!

Tablescaping

I love tablescapes but don’t yet have the dishware and serveware to really stretch my tablescaping legs (bring on the wedding registry).  Here are some tablescapes that make me swoon from my fabulous friend Monvi Drona

via Manvi Drona

LightingIntimate dinners can get by with soft lighting in the form of luminaries, candles, and lanterns

For a large party you can always go with extravagant lighting! Outdoor lighting is always fun and there a lot of different options. I would love to do something like this for my barn wedding. A dimmer switch would be perfect for this occasion so the lights aren’t too bright to throw of the mood!

Even a gorgeous chandelier can make any simple table stand out and feel elegant. If you need some lighting ideas Visit Downlights Direct to find the perfect pieces for your next party!

My new house – living room inspiration!

We’ve been in our home for over a month now and things are still looking sparse and unfinished. Part of the reason is that I have just been so busy with my freelance web design business, and also because I want to take my time and really get it right. Since we probably spend the most time in the living room, that’s the room I’ve really been thinking about. Here are a few items I have on my wish list.

Cleaner, sleeker lighting.  The lighting in the home is good quality, but it’s too Italian country for my tastes.  I’ve had my eye out for cleaner, more modern options, like this resin and nickel pendant light.
available at  One Kings Lane
We actually never had a coffee table in our apartment, but we have the space and need for one now.  I think wood and iron is a nice combination, though ideally something even simpler than this is what I’d like.
Okay, maybe accessories are at the bottom of my priority list, but these leaf trays are so beautiful. available at Joss & Main
I’m trying to decide if I want a sectional, or a gorgeous leather armchair and ottoman.  This chair looks heavenly!
All items above available at Joss & Main
None of these rooms exactly embody the look I’m going for, but they are close:

Vivian and Beverly Giveaway!

Today I am so excited to show of Laura – who started her own shop on Etsy called VivianandBeverly where she hand screen prints her own pieces for wall decor! She is giving away One Free Print Today!

Check out what Laura has to say:

Water Lilies - Teal Green

Tell us a little bit about your shop:

Here you will find original, hand-pulled screen prints. Some pieces are printed using a single color process while others are printed on top of a “”color-wash” painting. Occasionally, I also paint to enhance or highlight images on the printed surface, or to create a painterly effect. My subject matter originates from either my own photography or personal and public vintage photographs. All prints are signed on the back.

My shop name, “Vivian and Beverly,” are the names of my grandmothers, who have always been a tremendous inspiration to my work. I believe there is no better way to honor there legacy than by naming my shop after them. – Laura

Running Flamingos - Metallic Dark Grey

What got you started on etsy?

I am originally from the metropolitan area of Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from the Columbus College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in December 1999. I worked as an artist and art conservator in New Orleans, Louisiana for several years before pursuing a career as a full-time artist. I am a wife to a Coast Guardsmen and proud mother of one. Having an Etsy Shop has been a monumental tool for my business as a military spouse because we must uproot and move every couple of years. Through Etsy, I can connect with people from all over the world without any need for a store front. Presently, my family and I reside in Long Beach, California.  – Laura

 Osa Johnson - Vintage Gold

What’s your inspiration?

I have been fortunate to have incredible women in my life who have inspired me with their strength, courage, and resilience. In fact, this shop is dedicated and named after my beautiful grandmothers, Vivian and Beverly, who have been two of the most influential women in my life. My grandmothers have and continue to embody the very best of the American spirit; the ability to be a devoted wife and mother, yet remain independent, self-confident, and driven to be successful in other passionate pursuits in life. – Laura

How do you make these?

Naturally, I make use of these personal relationships in my artwork. My process begins by transferring an image onto a silkscreen using an ultraviolet light exposure process in which the image is burned into the screen. Then, I am able to print the image onto paper by pushing ink through the silkscreen using a squeegee. Printmaking and color have always been obsessions of mine since college; I simply love the process and anticipatory surprise when I see my image transferred to the paper for the first time. – Laura

Swan - Metallic Grey

What’s your favorite part of owning your own shop?

I consider myself one of the lucky ones. When I am not running after my little one, I am in my home studio, printing and painting…I am living my dream – to create beautiful pieces to brighten up people’s lives and their living spaces – something that would make both of my grandmothers very happy to know. – Laura

A truly heavenly kitchen

I’m pretty happy with the kitchen in our new home.  It is definitely a huge upgrade from anything I’ve had before.  Ideally I’d like to refinish the light maple colored cabinets in white, knockout one one to open it into the living room, and maybe even swap out the tile for hardwood.  For now though, it will do, and I’ll get my fix by perusing amazing kitchens like the one below.

The brick comes from demolished buildings in Chicago, and the steel hood is custom.

I’m in love with the walnut floors! They gray/green cabinets are elegant, but I think I still might have gone with white.

What do you think of these glass pendants?  What do you think about the whole kitchen?

Creating a space for entertaining

More and more, Chris and I were finding our small apartment tough for entertaining.  One thing on our “To Do” list for our new home is to knock down the wall between the kitchen and the living room to create a breakfast bar. That would give us a little more space to entertain, but mostly it would vastly increase the flow in our home, making even our modest space more conducive to guests.

This seating area isn’t particularly large, but the open concept layout and variety of seating makes for plenty of ways for guests to mingle.
This kitchen bar can be a great addition to more seating.
Sometimes the bar stool itself can make a big difference. Having backless bar stools still gives you the visual space you need but allows for guest seating.
I love this “campy” industrial wheeled cart turned bar.

Extra space worth using!

I love natural light in a home and tall ceilings can add to that by making a room feel large and bright. A great way to add some of that in a smaller home is doing a loft conversion. Opening up an attic and using that space can really add a lot to a home.

That extra space could go towards adding more square footage and creating a room in the attic! With a nice sky light window you can open up a small space with gorgeous natural light.

Using the natural shape of the extra space can create some stunning designs. Some people are nervous about truss loft conversions but using a specialist can make this transformation easy with as little disruption as possible.

Some spaces are large enough to convert into an entire loft apartment. Using a wall of windows really makes this space feel more like a getaway than an attic!

Another option would be to just open up the space. This kitchen hardly feels small with the tall ceilings and windows.
