    Neutral Interiors: Getting neutrals right

    Neutral Interiors

Neutral interiors can be a beautiful, restful thing.  Done wrong and your left with an overly vanilla and drab eyesore.

Here are neutrals that have it right:

The black drapery hardware, iron canopy bed, and thick black frame all add just enough contrast to create some depth in the space.

Leopard or other animal patterns are a way to do neutral but still add a lot of interest.

Mixing textures is another surefire way to add dimension to a space that has a lot of color in the same value.

Another example of mixing texture – the sisal, metal console table, iron lamp, and wood chests.  If all of these pieces were in wood, you can imagine how the space might look more drab.

  • Gorgeous floor inspiration

We are about to remove the carpeting in our home to hardwood floors, and while we are just having the new floor match the existing, I thought it would still be fun to search for some gorgeous floor inspiration!

Our original floors look like this, just not as glossy.

  • A sweet, serene Swedish interior

    Scandinavian style interiors…

I used to feature them a lot. Recently I have been veering away from that style. And while I may only hint at it in my home, I do still admire the simplicity and warmth of it.

    Inspiring white interiors

Used to be the pages of Decorology was always bursting with images of white interiors. While I still and probably will always love white interiors, my love of color has blossomed over time.  Nonetheless, I thought it would still be nice to pay homage to my first love, white interiors. Enjoy!

This would be such a nice bedroom for guests or a vacation home.

So pretty but with a pup and perpetually muddy backyard this white floor would always be covered in paw prints!

If I thought our current home was our forever home I would probably paint the cabinets white – because white kitchens are by far my favorite!

  • What to do…real hardwood floors or laminate?

What to do…real hardwood floors or laminate?

Currently our home is about 35% wall-to-wall carpet. The carpet is at least, fairly new, but it’s just not for me.  In my mind the only option is hardwood flooring. However nice hardwood floors are not cheap, especially considering the square footage we need for our home.

When you buy flooring for a home there is always the tough decision of either spending a lot of money for a great look or saving your pennies and going for a cheaper option that doesn’t fully achieve the stunning result you want.

These days, more and more people are turning to laminate, but I’ve only ever seen cheap laminate that sounds like you’re walking on thin plastic. I’m wondering if upscale laminate might be a budget friendly option that doesn’t sacrifice looks or other qualities of real wood….

Along with cheaper flooring costs, laminate also costs less to install than hardwood. That’s two ways to save if you are on a budget…

I seriously can’t believe some of these are laminate flooring.  The laminate flooring I’ve seen never has the groove between planks, which is what always makes it look so fake to me.  Below are actual laminate planks.

I’ve also read that if you have pets or children, some laminates are actually more durable than some hardwoods when it comes to holding up to wear and tear.

With us having a new puppy in the house, easy to clean floors is a MUST.

If cleanliness is something you love, laminate definitely wins the spot on that one. Sounds like it’s really easy to clean and keep clean!

You all know how much I love a bright bedroom and this light bedroom laminate flooring looks just as nice as real wood. Once the puppy is potty trained I can add a nice throw rug too…

Luckily, with  laminate floors you get just as many options. There are so many different styles of laminate flooring, it isn’t going to be hard to find one that fits your style perfectly.

Whether you like a simple sleek finish or one with great texture and color, laminate is a viable consideration if price is a big issue.

  • Happy Friday – eye candy!

    Happy Friday – eye candy!

I feel awful I’ve been so neglectful of Decorology lately!  Our settlement couldn’t come sooner, because I’m not going to feel like the house is really ours until I have the keys.  Now I’m just in countdown mode until May 28th!

Here are some gorgeous spaces to get your weekend started off right:

I might test out having white floors in my home office.  I love the look but would only want to commit to a small space in the beginning.

  • O M G – Best house tour ever!

    O M G – Best house tour ever!

I don’t know how to make your Monday better, because if this house tour doesn’t leave you high off the beauty I don’t know what will. It is simply gorgeous.

The house is registered for film and photo shoots – so no one actually lives here. Still, it’s beautifully done. Seriously, I would consider giving my left hand for this house. And I’m left handed.

  • An intriguing and whimsical housetour

    An intriguing and whimsical housetour

I’m leaving for my big trip tomorrow – 9 weeks in 11 different countries. I’m freaking out a little -feeling just completely overwhelmed. I’m going to try to post as often as possible – depending on our hotel(s) internet situation – as I’m not bringing my laptop- yikes! I’m already suffering from phantom laptop syndrome. I know I should be posting something traveling related – but I’m just a little too scatter-brained to put anything together – so I’m going with a tried and true house tour.

This home is really different from anything else I’ve seen before. I think for the most part it somehow manages to avoid being over the top though. What do you think? Too quirky for you?

    great wall color!
