    What Is Transitional Interior Design?

Transitional interior design is a style that blends traditional and contemporary elements to create a cohesive and harmonious look. This design approach balances the warmth and comfort of classic styles with the clean lines and understated elegance of modern aesthetics. Key features of transitional interior design include:

Dining space and kitchen with round table and sitting bench

Neutral Color Palette: Transitional design often uses neutral colors such as beige, gray, taupe, and white. These shades create a serene and sophisticated backdrop that allows the blend of traditional and modern elements to shine.

Mix of Materials and Textures: The style combines various materials and textures like wood, glass, metal, and fabric. For example, you might see a classic wooden dining table paired with sleek, contemporary chairs.

Clean Lines and Curves: Transitional interiors feature a mix of straight lines and gentle curves. Furniture may have soft, rounded edges alongside pieces with more angular, streamlined designs.

Minimal Ornamentation: While traditional design often includes elaborate details, transitional design prefers minimal ornamentation. Any decorative elements are typically subtle and refined.

Functional and Comfortable Furniture: Comfort is key in transitional design. Furniture pieces are functional and inviting, often featuring plush upholstery and ergonomic designs that encourage relaxation.

Balanced and Harmonious Spaces: The goal is to create balanced spaces that are neither too stark nor overly ornate. This balance is achieved through careful selection and placement of furniture, décor, and accessories.

Timeless Appeal: Transitional design has a timeless quality due to its blend of styles. It avoids trends that can quickly become outdated, focusing instead on enduring elegance.

Personal Touches: While maintaining a cohesive look, transitional interiors often include personal touches such as family heirlooms, art pieces, or unique accessories that reflect the homeowner’s personality.

In essence, transitional interior design is about creating a space that feels both classic and contemporary, providing a versatile and comfortable environment that can adapt to changing tastes and lifestyles.

  • 3 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Wi-Fi

3 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most important technological innovations of recent times. For those of us who still remember the days of dial-up internet, the advent of broadband internet, and eventually, the wireless connectivity that Wi-Fi bought, the leap from one step of technology to the next has been truly revolutionary, in every sense of the word.

    via intagram/drivenbydecor

Wi-Fi might be one of the most convenient technologies to have entered our homes, in our lifetimes, however, it is also often one of the most frustrating technologies. Nothing quite matches the sheer annoyance that comes with an inexplicably weak or dropped signal, especially as we are all now used to going straight to Google without problems.

Here are three of the most basic, but also most important, steps that you can take in ensuring that you have the best possible experience when using your Wi-Fi.

Use the Latest Software and Hardware

For experienced computer users, this stuff is one of the most basic aspects of owning a computer, but for the average person, terms like ‘the latest drivers’ sound like some kind of black magic. If your Wi-Fi is working without issue, then it is probably best not to update your drivers, not unless you feel confident in your ability to roll them back should the new ones introduce problems that didn’t exist before. If, however, you are having issues with your computer or laptop staying connected to the Wi-Fi, then you might need to update your wireless drivers. Check out this guide for a simple, step-by-step walk-through of the whole process.

If you are still experiencing issues connecting to the internet, but you are able to connect to your router, then you may need to either update the router’s software or alter some of your internet settings on your PC or laptop. In order to update the software on the router itself, you will first need to log-in to it. Most routers these days have their password printed on them. Note that the password you need to log-in is not the same as the one that you use to connect to the Wi-Fi network. Here is a simple guide which will take you through the process of logging in and upgrading the firmware on your router.

Find the Perfect Spot for Your Router

Isaac Asimov once said that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” It is an adage that we can all relate to, and when it comes to our Wi-Fi networks at home, most of us never give a second thought to how it actually works. Without wanting to be overly technical, connecting to your network, and continuing to exchange information between your computer and the router, requires that both devices are able to transmit and receive electromagnetic waves, within which the information is encoded.

    home office

    via pinterest via modernchairs.eu

These waves can obviously penetrate walls and other obstacles, otherwise, you would need multiple routers throughout your home to receive coverage in every room. However, every wall or surface that these waves pass through will weaken the signal. For this reason, you want your router to be placed somewhere open and relatively free of obstructions. If you want your Wi-Fi signal to be received with equal strength throughout your house, then you will want to position your router centrally. If, however, there are some rooms where receiving a strong signal is more important than others then the router placement tips are slightly different – place your router nearer to these rooms to give them the best signal. If you’re still struggling, take a look at Best Buy’s router placement tips.

Security is Not a Dirty Word

Everyone by now is aware that connecting to the internet means taking a risk. There are a number of steps that you can take to increase your anonymity and protect yourself from intrusions. Those who are less net savvy will want to make sure that they have antivirus software installed so that they can browse the internet with peace of mind, but even this is a minefield. There are so many software options out there that those without a good understanding of how it all works may well find themselves at a loss as to how they should decide on the right piece of software for them. My recommendation is Malwarebytes, it is open source and allows you a free trial. Once you have paid for the software (which is very affordable) then you will receive all future versions of the software.

You should always password protect your Wi-Fi. This is now the standard and your router will ship with a password. Your instinct might be to change this password but, for mathematical and technical reasons which are beyond the scope of this article, the password your router ships with is going to be more secure than the one that you use for your e-mail.

Taking the time to learn a bit more about your Wi-Fi and the internet more generally is a good way to increase your confidence, both as a computer user and as a web surfer. These three tips are great places to start.

    Prior Planning

Proper planning is vital for any home improvement project when working on a tight budget. You don’t want yourself in a situation where you find the perfect couch only to find out that you don’t have enough money in your account.

Before you begin, find your design inspiration. You can do this by looking at magazines and searching on the internet. Then, break down the project into its components such as furniture, flooring, paint, accessories, and interior décor. You need to browse stores and get a solid idea on the cost of the components. Then check your budget and see what suits you best.

    Repurpose You Possessions

Repurposing old design elements can never be exciting as installing new pieces. But, it can definitely save you a lot of money. All you need is a bit of elbow grease and some good investment in free time, and you can totally transform the outlook of any part of your interior design.

Look around and ponder which items you can repurpose. Think whether you really need all those new kitchen cabinets or just getting them refaced would be a good idea? See whether there are hardwood floors underneath your current carpeting? Think whether you can freshen up your old bedroom suit just by fashioning it a new coat of paint. These are just small things that can really help you in the long run. They can also save you a good amount of money.

    Anchoring room with furniture

Working with a tight budget is always about prioritizing spending. Working with limited resources means you have to spend your money where you will receive the most value for it. In interior design, this means dedicating a major portion of your budget to furniture.

Furniture will likely last for years so it’s good to spend on the quality items. If you already have furniture you can also repaint it or polish it and make it new again. Furniture is not cheap so you will be spending quite some money on it. We advise you to invest wisely.

Furniture draws eyes towards itself. If you are investing in good furniture items, you don’t have to do much decor as it will take care of 80% of your interior décor if done creatively. After this is done, you’ll only have to add minor touches to pull the room together.

  • Transitional Rooms: Fresh mixes of the classics

Transitional Rooms: Fresh mixes of the classics

    Transitional Rooms

If I had to describe my style I’d say it was transitional.  I like clean, nothing over the top, soft colors with occasional accents, and just a little twist of the eclectic. Some of these rooms might employ more of one style than another, but they all incorporate mixing styles. All these images come from one of those overprices magazines you find at the grocery register.  These are from Easy Decorating Summer 2012. 5 years old, but all of these rooms you could see in a magazine today.

    transitional rooms

What really, really caught my eye in this entry way is the antique Oriental rug.  The colors are completely unexpected but warm up the space so much – I would never think to mix it with that curtain fabric – or a tie dye pillow.  But I love it.

    transitional rooms

The desk and chair in this office are hardcore industrial – but look ho romantic the armchairs are!  Another unexpected mix that really works.

    transitional rooms

This staircase takes the idea of a gallery wall all the way.  You could probably do this on the cheap too. At a flea market or used book store, find a book of illustrations that you really love, remove the illustrations, and frame them in simple frames from a place like ikea.  The uniformity of size and frames keeps the gallery clean but still full of impact.

    transitional rooms

I would never assume this room was a bathroom were it not for a little peek we get of the vanity. The worn sofa and freestanding storage are extremely unexpected next to the modern vanity.  And that antique Oushak rug….drool.

    transitional rooms

I don’t need to say much about this bedroom.  Gorgeous, gorgeous – the sweater throw, the chair, the mirror…perfection.

    transitional rooms

Rustic can be transitional!  The materials in this room scream rustic – like the weathered wood paneling on the walls.  But the clean lines of the furnishings keep it clean and unfussy.

    What do you think?

Transitional Interiors: A fresh and colorful 1940’s home

    Transitional Interiors

I particularly like this house tour because it’s not over the top or a complete interior design fantasy, and because transitional interiors are my favorite.  I can see real people living here. The house is located in Charlotte, North Carolina, and inhabited by a New York couple.  The interior design is by Lindsey Coral Harper.

This entry is like a breath of fresh air.

The kitchen floor is painted.  Harper says:  ”
The floor was stained a deep, dark brown, and it brought the whole room down. I suggested we do a large geometric design, because the kitchen is so large — it’s a 20-foot-long rectangle. The bold graphic breaks it up so it doesn’t feel so big. We kept the pattern clean and simple because the ikat on the sofa is so busy.”

A tip from Harper I’ve never heard before, but one that makes a lot of sense, if you are going for impact that’s not too over the top:

“You can only have one showstopper in a room. In the foyer, it’s the wallpaper; in the living room, it’s the curtains; in the dining room, it’s the chandelier; in the kitchen, it’s that acid yellow color. It’s like a dinner party — you can only have one great storyteller. If two people are vying for attention, it doesn’t work.”

    Love this bedroom.

What do you think of this house… a good balance of color?

  • Transitional interiors, a marriage of modern and traditional

Transitional interiors, a marriage of modern and traditional

Transitional interiors are my favorite because of their emphasis on clean lines. I think they also make for a happy marriage of both modern and traditional design.  It isn’t about fluff or frills. Transitional interiors focus more about quality finishes and furniture. That is a philosophy I can get behind!

It’s okay to take a breather.

Also, It’s a battlefield out on the internet these days, and everybody needs a happy place to breathe and decompress.  My happy place includes this eye candy – amazing transitional interiors.

  • Turning Your Bedroom into a Sanctuary

Turning Your Bedroom into a Sanctuary

In today’s always on world, finding time for yourself to just relax and chill can be difficult. As well as being short of time, most people live with other family members, which can make it hard to get away from everyone and everything.

However, most of us still have the luxury of having our own bedroom. This is important because it is a space that can easily be turned into a proper sanctuary. The fact that a bedroom is still seen as a private space means that it is somewhere you can go to be alone, and do your own thing.

Choose a restful style of decor

You need to resist the temptation to decorate your bedroom in a jazzy style. It is far better to opt for a more muted style of decor, which creates a more calming and relaxing ambience.

    Add a chair or sofa

If you have the space, invest in a comfortable chair, and footrest, or a small sofa. You will be surprised by just how much you use it.

    Get a nice headboard

For some reason, headboards went out of fashion, but, for 2017, they are back. Most retailers are once again stocking big, decorative, padded headboards. This is great news for you, because it means that your bed will once again be somewhere you can comfortably sit up and read.

    Let the light in

Now I know this is going to sound strange, but you really need to let as much natural light into your bedroom as possible. Being able to see the view will lift your spirits, and help you to rebalance after a frenetic day.

    elegant moroccan bedroom

    via Matouk

If you enjoy having breakfast in bed, or reading in your room during the day you will be thankful of the natural light. The trick with bedrooms is to install good quality curtains, or blinds, so that you can keep the light out until you want it.

It is also important to install good lighting in your bedroom. You want to be able to see what you are doing when you get dressed, and have enough light to be able to read comfortably. However, at times, you will want to dim the lights to create a more romantic, or relaxing ambience.

    luxury spanish colonial bedroom

    via Luxe

    Add a touch of luxury

In sanctuary bedrooms, luxury bedspreads are always a good idea. They make the room look fantastic, as well as feel great against your skin.

    A place to pamper yourself

The bedroom is the perfect place to enjoy beauty treatments. If you have enough space, set aside a cupboard, or chest of drawers to store everything that you need. Having everything you need readily to hand will encourage you to treat yourself to a foot spa, and face pack on a regular basis.

    Wire your bedroom for sound

If you find listening to music relaxing, consider investing in a good quality sound system for your bedroom. In a crowded house that may mean buying a set of wireless headphones, which will allow you to listen to the TV or your music system when everyone else is in bed, and sound asleep.

  • A home full of charm, beautiful details, and built-ins!

A home full of charm, beautiful details, and built-ins!

I love our home, but if I lived in this one I’d be pinching myself every morning to make sure I wasn’t still in a dream.  This is the Willow House by  Kate Marker Interiors.. It’s so serene and everything is top-quality craftsmanship.  It’s also full of built-ins and clever storage solutions.  I’ve filled our closets with adjustable wire shelving, but it’s just not the same as having built-ins.  Of course, the color palette is just right too.  White and soft hues on the walls with pops of color to breathe life into the space.

I really encourage you to click on these images to see them full size so you don’t miss out on how beautiful the furnishings and details are.

The house has modest, but great bones, which really lends itself to built-ins.

The neutral walls allow beautiful furniture like this amazing table to shine.

WWWAAAAYYYYY nicer than our laundry room.  Maybe laundry wouldn’t be so bad then.  My sweet hubby did build me a barn door similar to that one though, which I plan to share soon.

Treat a small space just like you would a large one and people seem to not notice how small it is as much.  Even in a small bedroom, I never put the bed against the wall.

The dormer windows still allow a decent amount of light in this room.

Love this piece.  Since most of the furniture is in more neutral colors, this cupboard in inky blue doesn’t add to the visual business of the space.

    Holy built-ins.

A kitchen desk in something I really want in our next house.
