Book Review: Out East Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons

I have the pleasure today of reviewing Out East Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons by Jennifer Ash Rudick and photographs by Tria Giovan.  Though I lived in NYC for many years I never made it out to the Hamptons.  Obviously I’d heard of it and knew it as a summer retreat for many New Yorkers.  Aside from being personally invited to the over 30 distinctive houses and gardens featured in this book, I can’t imagine a more comprehensive and beautiful way to really get to know the Hamptons than this robust, beautifully printed book.

Here’s a great summary from the publisher, Vendome:

“Cool breezes, miles of pristine beaches, and vast, open farmland have long attracted visitors to Long Island’s South Fork, known worldwide as “The Hamptons.” Residents in picturesque seaside communities from Southampton to Montauk are calling upon world-class designers to fine-tune their visions, giving rise to a fresh design vernacular: homes that are testaments to what can be achieved when inspired by the natural beauty of a unique locale—and when imagination is one’s only limitation.

Out East captures the enduring appeal of shingled houses, modernist oceanfront designs, artists’ compounds, and Montauk surf shacks. Jennifer Ash Rudick, a long-time Southampton resident, leads an insider’s tour of more than 25 houses, cottages, and pool houses. Tria Giovan, a Sag Harbor–based photographer, captures extraordinary gardens, verandas, lakeside pavilions, farmhouses, and converted barns.” via

Below are some of my favorite photos from the book.

“Despite the bold-faced names who have made their mark, a surprising thread of rusticity and relaxation runs through many of the Hamptons’ most appealing properties—which is precisely what makes the collection presented in the book so intriguing.”

If you are looking to treat yourself or a friend, this book is a no-brainer.  For me it’s an escape on a warm afternoon after putting my son down for a nap!  It can be purchased anywhere books are sold.

Tom Scheerer Decorates – My new favorite and MUST HAVE book

There are a lot of good design and decorating books.  A lot.  But Tom Scheerer Decorates by Mimi Read creates a whole new standard.  Not to sound corny, but this book takes me to my happy place.  It is so beautiful and inspiring.  Just get it.

Unfortunately my very bad scanner will not do the beautiful photography, by Francesco Lagnese, justice.

    Told you.
You can get it at Amazon.

    Preparing your home for Fall

It’s almost that time of year again! As much as I like fall, I’m sad that before we know it summer will be over. For some reason it didn’t really feel like summer much this year. I know I’m probably alone in this, but I love heat and even humidity. With the odd weather on the east coast we only got short spurts of heat. The stores are slowly switching over to fall items and I thought I’d share some of the things I’m eyeing for a fall transition in our home!

Personally I don’t consider summer over until the end of September. So I’ll be waiting until then to implement some of these changes, but based on where you are you may be able to get started sooner.

Candles. Make a candle vignette for your dining room table.  Light them every night at dinner.  Have fun picking out some candles and holders you really love and love looking at every evening.  Unscented is best.  I place mine on a mirrored tray for added light.

Throws.  Nothing says comfy to me like a chunky wool or FAUX fur throw.

Textured pillows.  You don’t really want to pile up the fuzzy pillows during summer, but fall is a great time to start putting out your textured pillows.  I’ve been wanting a mongolian lamb pillow for a while now.

Books Grab some books to curl up to! A Place Called Home is going to be released in  October and I think it’s going to be a coffee table keepsake!  I love having some inspiration at my fingertips and curling up on the couch while sweetums watches TV.

Tom Scheerer Decorates is an absolute feast for the eyes.  I didn’t want it to end and will be pouring over it often this fall and winter.  I’ll be sharing more from it later.

    Happy Friday Hodge Podge

I’m back on the farm in Maryland and we’re expecting 18-24″ of snow today and tomorrow! I was super indulgent today after all my traveling and slept till noon. (Naughty, I know) I’m a little late today but I want to send you into the weekend with a little eye candy. If you’re due for snow, hunker down with some homemade cookies and cocoa. If you’re not due for snow, enjoy you’re weekend anyway!

I’m starting to like darker interiors, and I love this darker, coastal style.
