    Mantel Decorating

My favorite part of decorating the house is bringing in small personal touches that make me smile each time I look at them, or showing off a collection I’ve grown over time. Mantel decorating is a great way to do just that, because nothing is permanent! You can change out a mantel like you would a shelf and make it the centerpiece of a room.

Here are some great ideas to welcome spring via your mantel:

If you are really open for change, painting your mantel and fireplace surround in a warm white is a great way to brighten it up for spring. Just make sure you are really committed if your surround is brick, as stripping paint off of brick is pretty darn tedious.

Loving this very clean and simple mantle with the white and gold accents.

You can’t go wrong with a quote. Make it something you want to remember each day or your latest mantra!  Got a cool set of pottery or ceramics? Showcase it on your mantle.

Adding a chic mirror above your mantle is a great way to make the most of precious natural light and makes a stunning focal point.  The coral on the mantle is also a nice homage to summer.  I always like to decorate with natural objects whenever possible.’

Use your mantle as a revolving art gallery.  I have way too many prints and little pieces of art from my travels to have all hanging at the same time, so I rotate them every few months.  The mantel is a great place to do that.

  • Gorgeous farmhouse tour from Ohio…

    Gorgeous farmhouse tour from Ohio…

A gorgeous farmhouse 2012 throw back!  This house’s style as stood the test of time.  Well, 5 years at least.

This Ohio farmhouse is chock full of second hand, vintage, and antique furnishings and accessories, which simply make it really fun to tour. More than the house though, I love the grounds…

    I love this shot…so peaceful

I adore this birdcage as decor, but I’m not really a fan of caging birds…

They scored the four poster bed on ebay.

This chicken coup used to be a cupola.

A shed is used as guest quarters.  I would probably use this as a painting studio though….

The sink is an old soapstone basin.

what do you think of the house and grounds?

  • A great book for all my girly girls out there

A great book for all my girly girls out there

The aptly titled “Hers,” by Jacqueline deMontravel is a treasure trove of inspiration and ideas to feminize your space, no matter what your style.   The book starts off with the “queen” of all feminine rooms, the bedroom.  The bedroom section was definitely may favorite, and helps you narrow down colors, details, fabrics, and layering.

I love this bedroom, and the balance between masculine and feminine. I’m also crazy about the delicate lace trimmed sheet paired with the chocolate brown coverlet. Perfect.

Like I said before, this book isn’t just about glitzy glam rooms.  It doesn’t matter what your style, you can still apply the suggested methods.

The bedroom section was my favorite, but the book also covers other rooms in other chapters, like home offices, outside spaces, creating your own personal space, accommodating guests, and accessorizing.

If this book sounds like just the motivation you’ve been needing for your home, you can buy it online here.

  • A clutter-free and warm home of a Toronto artist

A clutter-free and warm home of a Toronto artist

It’s often a bit hard to find a home that is minimal and clean but not cold or sterile. This cozy home is a carefully edited space of meaningful objects.

    The artist, Cylene

She keeps a rotating art wall, and displays collections, such as the cameras you see here, but the space still feels airy.

    The kitchen is so cute.

The artist also let the folks over at Covet Garden tour her studio. I always love seeing a studio because I majored in ilustration and spent many years among other artists in their studios.

  • The home office/studio of one of my favorite graphic designers/bloggers

The home office/studio of one of my favorite graphic designers/bloggers

Designer Fabien Barral’s blog, Graphic Exchange, is always my go-to site for design inspiration when I’m starting a new project and feel a little bit of designer’s block. He has a way of finding the most stunning work being produced in the graphic design world – especially when it comes to typography. It was no surprise really that his home office, which he shares with his wife in the countryside of France, is as equally inspiring.

Separate work stations provide lots of work surfaces, and in my humble opinion, one can never have too much surface area…

The plants are a nice touch… I have three in my space

One day I’ll have space to have a separate table for pencil/ink/and paint, and a separate desk for my computer…

Make organizational tools like filing/storage that are out in the open pretty, and somehow visually cohesive – love these.

Lovely office right? I know I’m a bit jealous.  You may also know Barral from Harmonie-Intérieure, a home-decor stencil company that does some really unique wall stencils.  I did a post on them years ago.

  • A house in gorgeous warm whites filled with vintage treasures

A house in gorgeous warm whites filled with vintage treasures

I’ve had this house tour for a while and have been anxious to share it with you. This is the home of Marcia Nelson, who you could probably guess from her marvelous collections not only collects antiques, but owns an antique shop.

    I LOVE vintage suitcases

    Great desk

“Marcia Nelson’s 1868 house is a repository of collections, neutral in palette but not in passion.”

I adore white pottery as well.

    What do you think?

  • Still a favorite – lovely white interiors

Still a favorite – lovely white interiors

white interiors – I still love them, I think I always will. What’s unique about these is they aren’t cool like most white interiors, but still warm and cozy. Mostly because warm accents are brought in by wood trim and accents.

    Enjoy!
LOVE all the texture on the bed – that’s how to make monochrome work

If that desk were a little bigger this office would be perfect for me!
