Vintage Accents in Modern Bathrooms: How a Touch of Timelessness Will Enhance Your Modern Aesthetic

Bathroom technology and design have thankfully come a long way in the last century, giving us more comfortable, utilitarian, and efficient furniture. Bulky vanities, ugly shower heads, and inefficient toilets have given way to sleek cabinets, beautiful chrome fixtures, and super efficient toilets! A fresh coat of paint and simple lighting have taken over the home decor trend by storm.

The modern bathroom is truly a high point in the history of bathroom design. But sometimes all the modern stuff just starts to feel a little too clean. Too functional. Too efficient. It makes the bathroom feel more clinical. I guess you can say that the modern bathroom sometimes can feel a bit boring.

Bathroom trends that focus on the sleek modern look are much better than we had before, but adding a touch of character with a vintage piece can be even more stunning than before. Seamlessly fusing the past and present together is a great way to create vibrant focal points in your bathroom, and if done well, can create an ambiance that is truly timeless. Just a touch of vintage can go a really long way toward perfecting your bathroom design!

An elegant, antique trim mirror against a simple white wall may be beautiful, but a rustic wood vanity will make your modern bathroom drastically warmer and more welcoming. Farm style basins perfectly offset sleek glass-and-steel shower enclosures and modern vanity cabinets. Shiny chrome accent pieces are sophisticated and a little futuristic, but paired with rich wooden wall tiles they become absolutely stunning!

What do you think? Can you imagine a great combination of vintage and modern?

If you’re looking for the perfect rustic vintage accents to add to your modern bathroom, be sure to check out Bathgems.com for a huge selection of high quality vanities, tubs, vessel sinks, and more!

  • Why I love the look of shiplap!

Why I love the look of shiplap!

If anyone has every seen the famous HGTV show Fixer Upper, you have seen shiplap plenty of times! I have to agree with Joanna when it comes to shiplap. It is simply beautiful.

Don’t know what shiplap is? It’s a rough-sawn pine paneling often used in barns and historic homes.

Farmhouse style Kid's Homework Area by Postbox Designs, DIY rug tutorial, shiplap wall tutorial, no-sew curtain idea:
There are certain times when I love it more though. Like when it’s used to define a certain space. This is great for the homes that have an open floor plan and need to separate spaces.
Not usually a fan of really dark walls, but this slate color works great with the stark white - also love the shiplap wall treatment::

In small spaces! Most small spaces need to feel sleek and clean in order to not feel so tiny. Shiplap is a great way to give a room character without making it feel smaller than it already is!
Natural Luxe in the Living Room:
I love the natural look of restored shiplap. If you really want add a sense of character to your home, using natural restored shiplap is by far the best!

A great way to use just a touch of shiplap would be for a wall accent. Putting it on just one wall is a great way to enjoy the texture and design and keep it in the budget!

My last favorite place to see shiplap is above the fireplace. It really adds to the focal point of the fireplace and is a great background for any picture you hang there.
Do you love shiplap? Where would you put it in your house?
  • House Tour: A stunning Portland Tudor renovation

These pics pretty much speak for themselves. This space is sophisticated and warm all at the same time.

I love the jewel tone palette combined with the soft gray walls and white casements.
I found this project on Jessica Helgerson Interior Design.  They say:
” The clients for this project were a family of four who had lived for a number of years in a Tudor house atop Portland’s Mt Tabor. It had been a grand house at one time, the first on its block, built during prohibition with a speakeasy in the basement. Unfortunately by the time our clients bought the house it had suffered several poor remodels and had fallen into disrepair. Our challenge was to retain the character and charm of the house, while fixing the things that had gone wrong and reworking the layout to create rooms for a modern family that enjoys cooking, eating, and being together.”

The interior architecture has so much charm and character.

We completely renovated the kitchen, taking out a wall to transform it from a narrow galley into a spacious room with a breakfast nook and a generous island. The kitchen is open to an adjacent “snug room” with comfortable built-in seating, a fireplace, and a television concealed behind a paneled wall. We relocated the powder room to an exterior wall where it could benefit from an existing window. In the living room, we designed two L-shaped sofas to create a simple and inviting furniture layout, which centers around a generous coffee table and fireplace. Our design for the coffee table was inspired by the hexagonal marquetry top on the clients’ heirloom dining table, which we kept and reused.
While I really can’t complain, maybe they went a little heavy with the oriental rugs and velvet upholstery, but it’s still amazing.  The lighting was all custom designed for the house.
Well, what do you think about this tudor renovation?

  • Making Cozy Comfortable

    Making Cozy Comfortable

How can you make a room that’s labeled as “cozy” be comfortable? With minimal space and few options to fill that space, how to make it look like you actually want to spend time in there?
Here are a few tips I have for making that transition from tiny to lovely.
6 Gorgeous Small Bathroom Ideas That Will Have You At Hello!
Take the room you have and add simple touches to make it feel like a home. A plant, a rug, a picture. Start small.
Dedicate space for what you love. We spend so much time making our home look like magazines but if it isn’t what you want in your home or isn’t useful, don’t buy it! Buy what you love and what you need.
Buy smart. One piece of furniture that you love, that fits the room is better than piecing together multiple pieces that may or may not work. Make smart choices that leave you with the best square footage and still comfy.
Be creative. Find pieces that have duel purposes and that provide you with more options, but also add character to the room.
Small spaces can be fabulous, as you’ll see in these tiny balcony garden spots with moods that range from city sophistication to pure Zen.
Keep it clean and fresh. Fresh flowers and clean blankets really can make a difference.
How are you making your cozy space more comfortable?
  • A Simple Chair can Change the Room!

A Simple Chair can Change the Room!

When decorating a room, I love to add a simple chair. There are so many advantages to having one, like an accent to tie the room together, extra seating, or to fill an empty space. They can add texture to an otherwise dull room.
They create a sense of comfort to a room.
They can provide personality and a pop of color.
It doesn’t matter what size the room is, there are so many styles of chairs you can easily find one to fit the space.
Even if you think a chair wouldn’t fit in, you’d be surprised it add’s a much needed character.
