Air Quality Considerations in Small Spaces

The tiny house culture is soaring in popularity. Owning a small space comes with unique challenges, though. You have to think about homeowner issues that people in larger spaces won’t. One of them is indoor air quality (IAQ), which comes with special difficulties for tiny homes.

Given the multitude of indoor air pollutants, conducting indoor air quality testing can assist in pinpointing a particular source of contamination and addressing it promptly. Luckily, G3 Environmental stands as a dependable partner, poised to swiftly deliver essential services and top-notch information. Committed to achieving the highest standards, G3 Environmental assures effortless attainment of fresh and uncontaminated air.

Here’s a guide on air quality considerations for small spaces.

    Tight Quarters and IAQ

    small houses

The tiny home culture isn’t just about the small homes that you see on reality television programs. One-bedroom and studio apartments, as well as dorm rooms, are tight spaces too. All of these dwellings have the same IAQ issues. The most important thing to realize is that you have less air in a small, enclosed area. When you have excessive pollutants in this space, the percentage of clean air is far too low. That’s why you must take special precautions to maintain high IAQ in a tiny home.

    Spray for Bugs

Bug infestations are one of the worst problems in tiny homes. The husks of these creatures are so small that you may not see them, but they wind up becoming a part of the air. These pollutants can trigger allergies and even asthma attacks in some instances. While you may think of bug spray as a problem for IAQ, the reality is that getting rid of pests is critical to healthy air.

    Check for Mold

Another one of the primary culprits of air pollution is mold. Dust mites, pollen, and mold are all major irritants that you don’t want floating in your HVAC ventilation system. You need to check for mold often, particularly in the areas of your living space that are most likely to get damp. That’s the attic and basement plus the baseboards of your home. If you see mold, you must sanitize the area to improve your IAQ.

You should also change air filters to lower the number of pollutants in your vents. A dirty air filter won’t stop as much gunk from getting into your vents. By replacing your air filter, you’ll trap more dust mites before they reach the vents. You may also want to buy an air filter with a higher MERV rating. These filters are even better at stopping pollutants from reaching your ventilation system. You can make a huge difference in your IAQ by spending a few more dollars on a better air filter.

    Don’t Use Air Fresheners

Air fresheners sound like they’d do wonders for your IAQ. In reality, these fragrant devices emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are terrible for the air that you breathe. The same is true of candles. You may love the scent, but you’re risking your health by using them.

Instead, you should use naturally fragrant scents, like flowers, in your home. Fruits also work well, as long as you remember to replace them before they go bad. These fragrances are just as lovely, and they don’t hurt the IAQ in your home.

Living in a small place is a popular choice today. If you’re going to do so, just make sure that you follow the advice listed here. These tips will make you air more breathable.

Wall Inspiration: Walls that Make A Statment

    Wall Inspiration

Lately my eyes have been drawn to some great rooms that are making a statement and I am loving it! Whether they are bold, classy, or just downright elegant, it is nice to see someone take a chance and make something beautiful out of it.

This wallpaper would not be an immediate first choice for me but it definitely does make you stop and stare! Seeing it in this room really makes me love it more! If you can’t commit to a whole wall in wallpaper, consider some wall decals or smaller wall decorations from a resource like https://americansignletters.com/.

A wall of windows is always eye-catching. The bold choice of black makes it stand out even more and I think it was a great choice.

Another non traditional wall paper in a room you wouldn’t expect! Since bathrooms are small I tend to do with less is more in these areas but since the wallpaper has a lot of white space it really works here! I also like the simplicity of the color scheme.

Upholstery tacks are often seen on furniture, seeing it as a wall decor statement is something I’ve never considered.

Oriental rugs in modern homes and decor

Oriental rugs in modern decor are something I’ve had my eye on lately.  Oriental, or any hand-knotted antique rugs in that case have a way of beautifully grounding and warming up a space, which is why I think they work in modern decor so well, and the contrast makes a great impact.

I’m also listening to an audiobook right now, Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani, and the descriptions of the rugs inspired me to find some examples to share with you guys.

Day to day, this office space would be too dark for me, but otherwise I love the rustic table and the ornate oriental rug.

I’m sure I’ve posted this image before but I just had to share it again, it’s so beautiful. I don’t know if I could live with glossy black shiplap, but the effect is dramatic!

  • Proof wall to wall carpeting can be gorgeous

Proof wall to wall carpeting can be gorgeous

Growing up in an old farmhouse, we always had hardwood floors, so it would be hard for me to go to carpet I think.  That being said, wall to wall carpet does have it’s advantages.  Nothing beats it’s coziness underfoot, and when you have an infant who spends his day on the floor, under butt.  Also, if you live in a rental, wall to wall carpeting might be what your stuck with.  So fear not, or rejoice – wall to wall carpeting can be just as gorgeous as hardwood floors.

Wall to wall sisal carpet paired with the black walls looks so sophisticated!

If I were to ever go the carpet route I would want something with a modern texture in a neutral shade.

In this neutral bedroom the carpeting adds another layer of rich texture.

Loving these grays with the pops of yellow.

How dreamy and lush is this dressing room walk-in closet with diamond patterned carpet?

Pretty pretty gold bamboo bed frame with a minimal geometric patterned carpet in gray keeps things crisp.

St. Bart’s house tour: cool, crisp Caribbean style.

This house tour will have you packing your bags.  It is the home of Keld Mikkelson of Day Birger et Mikkelson and his wife Marianne Brandi.  In full disclosure I’d never heard of them, but if their clothing and accessories line are like they’re home, I’m sure I’d be a fan.  The home is adorned in sleek blacks and pure whites, along with natural textures and elements to reflect the beautiful island they live on.
I collected these images from two different stories, which is why the photos look different and the rooms are sometimes styled differently.

What do you think of the ladder as book display?

I really like the geometric black and white rugs.  They work in any and every room in the home.

The gallery wall helps make the space more inviting.

    The ceiling is amazing.

I love the black and white bedding too, and the nightstands.

Love the bathroom! It’s what drew me to the house.  That antique chest contrasting with the white tile is amazing.

    So jealous.

    amazing.

    This home is gorgeous!

What do you think?  Who wants to chip in with me and buy a home on St. Bart’s???

  • An elegant bohemian loft

    An elegant bohemian loft

A stylish and sophisticated loft in Philadelphia

Elegant and bohemian aren’t normally two styles you necessarily see together, but done right they make quite the beautiful pair!  This loft is the work of Design Manifest, and isn’t new to the blogosphere, but worth a revisit! All photos are from Design Manifest.

Stark white walls are the canvas, but you’ll find ample pops of pink, blue and black as accent colors.

Amazing light and a lot of seating – hard for this loft not to look friendly

I love that the home is full of what look like travel souvenirs.

Even the bookcase is full of pops of color.

Blue,  pink, red and black create quite a punch on this accent wall.  There is also a chinoiserie theme throughout.

I really like the suzani tablecloth.

A small wall is painted black to designate a bar area.

The bedroom is still colorful but in more muted tones.

What do you think of this modern bohemian loft?

  • Black & Gold

    Black & Gold

Black and gold are colors that tend to stay in trend. You can’t go wrong with either one and they can look really classy done well.
Since black can get dark and dreary quickly, I always suggest a great balance of natural light and/or white.
The touch of gold gives it a great shine to contrast the black.

The combination is also great with almost any other color.
