Furnishing a small apartment, here’s what you need to know

There’s something charming in living in a small apartment.

As our cities grow bigger, more and more people are finding the allure of living in a space that doesn’t require much to upkeep and feels cozy.

    via Blackband Design

With that in mind, there are many things that you have to think about when you’re furnishing a small apartment. From choosing the right furniture to decorating and painting the space in the appropriate colors as to not feel tiny, most things people who have little to no experience in decorating small living spaces get it wrong.

And that’s normal. Most of the things that you would do to decorate a small apartment you wouldn’t do when you’re decorating a full-sized four-bedroom house.

    via Blackband Design

But that’s why we’re here. To break down the walls and expose the secrets of decorating a small-sized apartment and make sure it feels big, spacious, and comfortable.

Make sure your bed is the most comfortable one you can afford.

If you think about it, you spend a lot of time in your bed when you’re living in a full-sized apartment, let alone when you are living in a small living space. That means that you will have to go with the best choice of mattress you can afford.

We’d suggest you go with the best mattress for back pain because if you’re using your bed as a couch too, it’s good to have a comfortable space to rest in.

    via Blackband Design

In other words, make sure your bed is comfortable enough to double as your couch as well.

The secret to having enough space is going with vertical storage.

Yup, you heard it here. All well-designed small apartments know how to utilize vertical storage for maximum storage room without getting making the living space feel cramped.

When you’re deciding on how to furnish your home, always make sure you’re buying storage furniture that goes up rather than sideways.

Vertical storage is also what will ensure that you have enough to keep your apartment free of clutter. It’s the best way to make use of the space you have available.

    via Blackband Design

Invest in dual-purpose furniture as its super important to keep your apartment as roomy as possible.

One other thing that you will have to add to the list of things to factor in is the furniture you’re buying. You will have to plan every piece as dual-use furniture.

That means that maybe your dining table will have to double as your desk where you can work or study.

As we mentioned, your bed may be the substitute to a full-sized couch or even vice versa. Everything that you buy in your small apartment will have to serve one more than usual purpose, so make sure you buy smartly. A hollow ottoman can be used for storage space, for example.

There are even companies that specialize in creating furniture for small apartments, particularly, so your home will never feel cramped.

Your organization system is one of the most important things that you’ll have to develop.

You will have to create your very own organization system that will be tailored to your apartment and your unique needs.

Everything from how you store shoes, to other things you use every day should be accounted for. That means that you’ll have to spend some time living in the apartment and test out how you can keep everything neatly organized before you get to create a system that you can follow.

Of course, you can use one you found online and just tweak it to your desire.

Light colors are always the thing that can make a small apartment feel roomy and airy.

The secret to making the living space feel roomy? Go with light colors. In fact, go with all white.

Paint walls white as well as your ceiling. It’s the best way to make everything feel more spacious and roomy. Not only that, but you’ll feel like the room has filled with light. White particularly is a great choice for that.

And, it becomes something like a canvas that you can paint on and experiment. While we don’t necessarily mean that you should paint on your walls, we do mean that you should decorate appropriately to make everything pop.

Splashes of bright color can be amazing to add some character to your apartment.

Don’t be afraid of using bright colors to make the furniture in your apartment pop. That means maybe you’ll go with a red couch, or you’ll have a lamp that is a matching color in order to tie in the whole living space.

And don’t forget to experiment. Add different colors. Mix and match until you find something that feels uniquely you. Thanks to Ghost bed for consulting.

Victorian isn’t my style really, but I definitely can appreciate the history and flair of the style.  It’s also a style that goes well with fall and winter, since all of it’s flair and opulence really emphasizes that cozy-up at home feeling.

One of the first elements people probably think of when they think of Victorian is wood details.  The interior below is a Bed-Stuy brownstone on Doctor’s Row that was painstakingly restored and has wood details for DAYs.  If you like a modern look you might think it would be hard to work with all that wood, but there is a plethora of inspiration online to show you how to make it work.

Modern victorian design incorporates elements of traditional Victorian interior design – velvet, tufting, and fringe – but uses modern style lines and incorporates modern pieces, as seen below:

  • How to Decorate Your Short-Term Rental for Cheap

How to Decorate Your Short-Term Rental for Cheap

As renters, we know it’s hard to spend a lot of time decorating a place just to move out a short time later. Imagine going through an entire redecoration process only to move into another place where none of the new stuff you bought matches. You might think, “Forget it, why bother, we’re only living here short-term.” It’s easy to feel defeated with Crate & Barrel taste on a short-term rental budget.

Sure, you’re only staying short-term, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yourself while you’re there. There are ways to make a lovely living situation without going all out.

There are two key components in having a cozy home without the commitment: cheap and easy.

There’s no need to go above and beyond and paint the entire house or rip out flooring. Instead, opt for ideas that’ll make the time you spend at the rental easygoing, but still comfortable. Here’s how to decorate your short-term rental for cheap.

Buy an inexpensive, yet expensive-looking couch

There’s no good budget-friendly interior design advice article that doesn’t mention IKEA. IKEA is the budgeters closest ally.

When someone walks into your home, the first thing they notice is the couch. That is, if the living room is the first place they see, which it usually is.

The couch will make or break a room, so make sure you get something classy. However, don’t bother spending a lot if it’s a short-term rental. IKEA (offering promo codes here and here) has great options for short-term leases. For under 600 bucks, you can pick up the VIMLE couch and add a splash of sophistication to any apartment.

    couch

Doesn’t this couch look like it costs a lot?

Sure, you may be stuck in a white-walled apartment and boring rug, but at least you can make the most important part of your living room look nice.

    Use plants and flowers

Add elegance to your short-term rental by using nature! The Heart & Hand collection at Target (codes here and here) encourages bringing “outside in” and decorating with simple pieces.

    plants and flowers

Place plain glass vases on the dining table and stick a few branches or flowers in them. This touch will make it much more homey. It’s amazing what a little greenery or floral elements can do to an otherwise drab interior.

You can also add pebbles to the bottom like in the image below.

    vase

Simplicity will be the best word to remember when trying to figure out how to decorate your short-term rental for cheap.

    Pick out wall decals

Painting a short-term rental is not happening. The task of painting is so exhausting, it’s hard to imagine even painting a long-term rental. This is where some good wall decals could work. Just look at what these palm leaves do for this plain white wall!

    Palm Leaf Decals

Etsy (codes here & here) is the best place for wall decals. They have the most options and probably the cutest choices. Plus, they’re relatively cheap.

Buy a giant, wall covering piece of art

Instead of painting, you could go for a wall decal. If you don’t even want to go through the hassle of that, just hang something up.

    statement art

Get a cheap, yet cute piece of art you can hang up and have it cover most of a wall in your living room or bedroom. Bringing it back to IKEA, they have a good amount of inexpensive pieces of art that you can easily hang on your wall.

A nice statement art piece can add a relaxed mood to your home for your guests or for yourself during a night in. The focus is creating a place of serenity for yourself in your short-term rental.

    statement art

You won’t need to add much to your home once you let a calming, pleasant looking piece of art do the talking.

    Find a vintage lamp

Visit a local estate sale, pop into Goodwill, or check out your nearest flea market and see if you can find the perfect vintage lamp. A good, single vintage lamp in the living room can add some unique personality to a home.

You can also usually sell vintage items for the same price you purchased them for if you decide you don’t want to take it with you when you move out of your short-term rental. Let it bring you joy in the meantime.

Auction sites are a good place to snag antique lamps at a good range of prices. Just check out this one that’s going for $124 on eBay (codes here and here).

    antique lamp

An antique lamp will polish the look of your short-term rental by keeping it unique to you. Decorating cheaply requires buying a lot of stuff that may be commonly seen in other homes, so grabbing a vintage piece will keep your interior design one-of-a-kind.

    Create a coastal oasis

Using seashells to decorate cheaply has been a tactic for short-term renters for decades. It’s a timeless way to brighten up a home without spending nearly anything. Honestly, if you live near the water, you could do it for free!

At Bed Bath & Beyond (coupon codes here and here) you can buy a bag for under 10 bucks and go to town placing them everywhere.

    shells

Buy larger sized shells from Pottery Barn to complete the look (coupon codes here and here).

    shells

Add a beachy Yankee candle (promo codes here, here) and you’ll be absolutely set! It doesn’t take much to create a tranquil atmosphere in your short-term rental.

Hang up photos of loved ones

What better way to decorate than to use your favorite photos of loved ones? Grab some cheap frames from Michaels (coupons here and here) and place memories in them to look at whenever you’re home.

    gallery wall

Create a collage of photos with mismatched frames for a rustic and eclectic feel.

    Conclusion

Even if it’s short-term, your time wherever you are should be enjoyed. Hopefully this how-to guide helped in fixing up your rental and gave you some tips on cheap yet pleasant interior decorating.

7 Inexpensive Decorating Ideas for Small Apartments

Small spaces are really hard to decorate. If you decorate a small apartment with too many things it would be cramped and crowded. If you use too less decorative items, it would look empty and deserted. You have to find the perfect interior décor balance for it to look welcoming and attractive. This is why we have dedicated today’s post solely for this purpose. Here are ten ways to decorate a small apartment especially when you are on a budget.

    Lighting

Lighting can either make or break a room. So invest in lower-wattage bulbs because they will allow you to change a room’s mood from romantic to restful. Please don’t handle the electric matters yourself as it can be very dangerous for you and your house. Always go for professional assistance and if you are having trouble finding commercial electricians in your area, http://www.newedgegroup.com.au/can help you out in this regard.

    Remnant tables

When buying fabrics for décor never miss out those remnant tables at your local fabric stores. They are perfect for banding drapes, recovering pillows and other handling other sewing projects around the house. These tables can offer you fabrics at 1/3 of the price and are just as good as those on the shelves.

    The Greenery

Having plants in any room makes you feel more alive. Simple green foliage usually lasts longer than flowers. Even the design of a single leaf can make a striking effect. Try putting a single palm leaf or even a slender flax in a giant vase. It will cast a simple yet a modern appeal.

    Focus on Floors

Your floor is also an important part of your house and just like walls, they need your attention too. To completely change the floor surface, try staining wood floors. You can also install a carpet or replace old linoleum. For a quick fix, just add an area rug. Trust us, just by making the floors distinct, your walls can definitely look better.

    Storage Matters

Storage matters a lot when you are living in small spaces. You generally have two options: building under or building up. If you want a dramatic effect to consider building tall bookshelves. You can also take the advantage of the space underneath your bed and store things there. Toffee tables with hidden storage options are also a good item to buy. These things help in keeping the clutter out of sight and improve the outlook of your house.

    Combining Patterns

Make things fun and colorful and combine patterns, styles and different textures of fabric in almost everything from furniture to window treatments and accessories. It will add color to your rooms and also your life.

    Illusions

Cast illusions to give a roomy and spacious feeling to your small apartment. Vertical lines or similar patterns on walls can cast an illusion of a high ceiling. Similarly installing a mirror on a complete wall can make a room look twice its size.

In NYC square footage may be small, but style is big.  This amazing make over was done completely over the internet too, via eDesign.

Even the little dining area is glam!
I never would have thought to pair the bold modern wallpaper with the traditional, muted palette of the rug.
Vertical storage like the bookshelves are a must-have in small spaces. Love the styling of the shelves too.
    The art is great, too

Have an impressive collection? Show it off!

  • A most pretty little space

    A most pretty little space

I’ve yet to loose my sense of wonder at beautiful interiors, but even more so when the space is small! As some of you know, I work from home, and live small, so I’m always on the look out for great small spaces that serve as both live and work space. I think this apartment, owned by a jewelry designer who works as well as lives in it, is just one such example

I think the light colors used consistently lends an openness to the space

Collections are kept in neat groupings

Her desk/workspace is behind the couch in the living room

    Lovely desk details…

Jess’s Tips for working from home:

    1. Make the space work for you:
Jess says her kitchen was begging for an island, so she placed a large table there that doubles as a jewelry assembly station by day and a dining room and kitchen prep table after hours.

    2. Dress for work:
Jess puts on a nice outfit with shoes when she’s working. As for her space, she uses overhead lights during business hours, while pharmacy lamps atop cabinets and bookcases create a homey glow in the evenings. (I like this idea, however, living on a farm with muddy dogs means I only dress nicely for meetings or going out)

    3. Separate storage:
To avoid seeing a stack of business receipts when she’s looking for a recipe, Jess keeps her office supplies completely separate from her personal items. Each day her assistant wheels out a cart with the jewelry supplies and it’s tucked away at night. (I think this is really important, to have all of your work supplies put away at the end of the day – however, I think I would rent a separate office space or get a bigger apartment before hiring an assistant – but that’s me..)

  • Gorgeous but small bedrooms that are creative with space

Gorgeous but small bedrooms that are creative with space

So, reader Kaylee propositioned me with a request to round up some tips and tricks for making a small bedroom work. So, hopefully, I’ve found something that can inspire everyone in someway – even if you have a big bedroom!

To save precious space in this bedroom, the TV has been mounted on a pivoting arm, and a shelf has been mounted above the radiator for plants.

For this SUPER small bedroom, a shelf has been mounted by the bed since there was no space for a nightstand.

An unusually shaped bedroom is pulled together with a matching pair of nightstand, and the projector is mounted above the bed.

Love big color but afraid it will make your small room look smaller? Try it out by painting just one wall – ideally behind your bed (usually the focal point of a bedroom). I love this turquoise wall in this tiny bedroom.

The upholstered white bench actually serves as pretty storage as the top opens as a chest. A small night stand and lamp gives you storage but still fits in the space

Another creative use of a small space. A narrow but tall dresser is vertical storage and a TV stand, and dog beds go under the bench. No dogs? Get some rectangular baskets to slide under the bench or bed for storage.

This is a studio apartment but this bed is a perfect example of clever storage. I also like the clever arrangement of framed photos behind it.

Isn’t the tiny chandelier adorable? And the wide windowsill is used as a surface.

    via Apartment Therapy

Another bed with lots of storage items. I don’t know if the dresser at the end of the bed is a footboard or an actual dresser – but it’s a unique storage solution.

Instead of a traditional headboard – a tall and narrow console can act as a headboard visually but provide space for lamps, books, and other smallish items.
