    House tours from Domino

An oldie but a goodie – a classic Domino post!

As part of my ongoing series of posts honoring our late friend Domino, I now bestow upon you some lovely house tours we all came to look forward to every month. *sigh* Enjoy.

Kathryn Ireland’s rustic style home. I love the humble bathroom, and the console in the kitchen with the dishes stowed underneath.

Actress Julianne Moore’s stab at interior decorating. I like some of the choices she made – not all my style, but still pretty. I like the piece of drift wood on the radiator.

A rebuilt green home in New Orleans.

Domino style director Dara’s lovely white bedroom.

I love Amanda Peet’s down-to-earth, bohemian home. It’s so ethereal and filled with interesting, meaningful objects. I also love that you can tell that she had a hand in it. She didn’t just hire some designer to come in and make it look like a movie star’s home.

  • Beautiful kitchens in every style

    Beautiful kitchens in every style

Beautiful kitchens are hard to ignore. Kitchens are undoubtedly the busiest rooms in the home, so making it beautiful and functional is (maybe) more important than the function/aesthetics of any other room in the home. Kitchens also tend to be toward the front of the home and therefore see more traffic and visitors then dens and bedrooms. All the more important to make your kitchen welcoming, efficient, and a place that you, your family, and your friends will want to be.

    white kitchen with modern barstools

The geometric rug and the super cool modern barstools add character and style to an otherwise staid, albeit beautiful white kitchen. I love those leaded panel windows and the counter to ceiling white subway tile.

    casual white kitchen with island

Another white kitchen gets some character and fun with a green kick board at the breakfast bar. A glossy brass pendant and gleaming tile balance out the country stools and light wood floors.

    elegant country kitchen

This kitchen might be my favorite.  The large rustic island, the absolutely stunning runner in faded colors, the layout, it’s somehow peaceful and energizing at the same time.

Vintage stove and exposed brick wall

I think this stove could make even the most reluctant person want to cook.  It looks like a work of art.  The pale exposed bricks and decorative open shelves is a nice touch too. Add the copper accents and amazing hood and you have a very French aesthetic.

    modern rustic kitchen

This might be a galley kitchen, but it sure packs a punch! The windows are amazing!  The thick black counters and vertical wood panel cabinet fronts are really dramatic as well.  I never thought a kitchen could look “zen,” or spa-like, but this one sure does.

beautiful galley kitchen with hardwood floors

Another amazing galley kitchen.  The soft gray herringbone floors lead you to beautiful glass doors.  The skylight also adds light to reflect off of the beautiful brass cabinetry hardware.

Do you have a favorite kitchen from the ones above?

  • Traditional kitchens, stunning and white, from architect John B. Murray

Traditional kitchens, stunning and white, from architect John B. Murray

Below are some jaw-dropping traditional kitchens from the John B. Murray Architect. I’ve featured their work before, as I’m a big fan of the mix of modern efficiencies with the character and novelty of more traditional interior design principles.

My kitchen is nowhere near the size of these. In fact, I only have 4 drawers, but it is streamlined and efficient, so until we move or plan a massive remodel, which is NOT in the cards, I’ll be happy with my little kitchen and simply admire these.

    white large kitchen

A huge island is a no-brainer when it comes to adding prep space, and the extra storage below can double your storage space. I love the plank ceiling and the matching pendants over the island.

    white country kitchen

Loving all of the windows here and the rustic wide plank hardwood floors are beautiful.

    beautiful modern kitchen

    modern white kitchen

I guess this kitchen is more modern than traditional, but I thought it was worth sharing. In a narrow space the more light you can get the better. I love the sleek marble slab backsplash.

    white kitchen island

Love the classic use of subway tile as a backsplash in this elegant modern kitchen.

    kitchen with tile backsplash

This kitchen may be large, but the tile backsplash, wood hutch, and country table and chairs keep it cozy.

    rustic kitchen sink area

I don’t know if this is from a kitchen, but this shot was so pretty I thought it worth sharing.  The cabinetry and wood paneling is gorgeous!

  • Oriental rugs in modern homes and decor

Oriental rugs in modern homes and decor

Oriental rugs in modern decor are something I’ve had my eye on lately.  Oriental, or any hand-knotted antique rugs in that case have a way of beautifully grounding and warming up a space, which is why I think they work in modern decor so well, and the contrast makes a great impact.

I’m also listening to an audiobook right now, Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani, and the descriptions of the rugs inspired me to find some examples to share with you guys.

Oriental rugs gray wall home office

Day to day, this office space would be too dark for me, but otherwise I love the rustic table and the ornate oriental rug.

The pops of pink in this oriental accent rug look gorgeous with the blue walls.

Persian rug gray wall living room

The patina and wear of an antique rug makes it even more beautiful.

Oriental rugs black wall living room

I’m sure I’ve posted this image before but I just had to share it again, it’s so beautiful. I don’t know if I could live with glossy black shiplap, but the effect is dramatic!

I also really like geometric oriental rugs.  If you are into a more casual or rustic look they are a good choice.

  • Warm and rustic spaces to inspire you to cozy up for winter

Warm and rustic spaces to inspire you to cozy up for winter

Well, we’re expectinh highs of 78 here in Maryland, but we all know winter will be here in the blink of an eye.  Whether you’re a fan of winter or not, these rustic cozy interiors will make evenings indoor a toasty treat.

A glamorous modern chandelier and sleek upholstered headboard nicely contrast the dark wook paneling.

A really cool live edge wood headboard, and wool and fur textures make this the perfect cold weather retreat.

This ceiling has so much vision.  I never would have thought to panel the ceiling in wood planks! All of the textures in the bedding are nice too!

How gorgeous is this hallway and staircase with wood beams?

This kitchen is AMAZING.  Sleek cabinetry and square tiles paired with rough hewn beams, wideplank floors, and that island?!?

Just add a fireplace to this bathroom and it’s perfect for winter nights!

    Modern Rustic Inspiration

Growing up on a farm, I feel at home in a rustic interior.  That being said, I also like interiors that are uncluttered and have very clean lines.  One doesn’t easily find a straight line in nature, so in my eyes blending straight, clean lines with natural organic elements is an art form.  Here are some interiors that I think perfectly blend modern with rustic.

Yes. Dark hardwood floors.  Tons of natural light. Textured wide wood plank ceilings. Sliding barn doors. YES.

I think this is Meg Ryan’s kitchen.  Love all of the white and wooden beams.

You can also successfully incorporate bright colors in a neutral palette.  I’d personally use the brights as accents or pops of color.
    via Home Adore

Man oh man.  I’d be getting dirty A LOT just to spend more time in this bathroom.  Pepple tile on the floor, copper tub, wide wood plank walls, exposed brick….!!

This bedroom is styled to the hilt but I’m a sucker for a pretty bed.  The headboard brings in texture and an organic sensibility, while the window casings and moldings create a tailored look.

Are my stables just outside to the right?  That’s what I’d expect if this were my foyer. Exposed wood beams, stone floors, a mirrored wall..that amazing neutral and monochrome oriental rug!!

Tired of the same old wainscoting and paint and wallpaper?  Consider shiplap or wood plank walls for a unique and rustic look.  The straight diagonals, verticals, and horizontals keep this hall and staircase crisp and clean.

  • Old barns converted into beautiful family homes!

Old barns converted into beautiful family homes!

Historic barns turned into functional living spaces

I spent the better part of this weekend scrubbing out my barn and stalls by hand this weekend due to a broken pressure washer, so I have barns on the brain.  Our barn is just a small metal pole barn with two stalls, but it doesn’t make it hard to imagine the amazing open concept layout someone could create with a grand old barn of wood or stone.  Here are some pretty examples I found.

I love the contrast of the dark wood floors and the white walls and beams.

If the wood is kept dark, it’s a good idea to incorporate large windows for natural light and white or light walls (unless you like dark interiors!)

I’m not a fan of taxidermy as decor, but that door opening to the yard is pretty fantastic!

Beautiful light stone and natural wood floors make this barn conversion quaint and pretty.

I think the photo above and below are from the same barn.  I don’t know if I could live on concrete floors, but I like the white plank walls and the rustic furnishings.

Okay, this may not be for everyone, but how amazing would it be to be able to keep watch over and observe your animals while going about your daily household duties!

So pretty in every way!  The large windows, vaulted ceiling, and character-rich hardwood floors are so pretty.

Chip and Joanna’s Fixer Upper Magnolia House

Fixer Upper’s B&B The Magnolia House

I’ve only caught a few episodes of Fixer Upper but the ones I saw I really liked. Then a photo of the Magnolia House caught my attention, and that’s what led me to discover that it’s a bed and breakfast owned by the couple.

Loving the shiplap – as we featured in a post last week!  The chandelier in the living room is a nice touch too.
Shiplap abounds!  And those teal cabinets! I really like them.
Iron canopy beds are so romantic.
I really love this space, which I imagine is the lobby.
