Dream home: Lots of natural light, architectural details, and beautiful colors

A pretty and polished home from Studio McGee

This house is pretty darn close to my dream house.  The large windows that pour in natural light, the molding, the palette in neutral cool tones with pops of color here and there. …sigh….

I really, really like the clean lines of the furniture used throughout the entire home.

Traditional kitchens, stunning and white, from architect John B. Murray

Below are some jaw-dropping traditional kitchens from the John B. Murray Architect. I’ve featured their work before, as I’m a big fan of the mix of modern efficiencies with the character and novelty of more traditional interior design principles.

My kitchen is nowhere near the size of these. In fact, I only have 4 drawers, but it is streamlined and efficient, so until we move or plan a massive remodel, which is NOT in the cards, I’ll be happy with my little kitchen having all cooking utensils such as good quality kitchen knives and simply admire these.

    white large kitchen

A huge island is a no-brainer when it comes to adding prep space, and the extra storage below can double your storage space. I love the plank ceiling and the matching pendants over the island.

Loving all of the windows here and the rustic wide plank hardwood floors are beautiful.

    beautiful modern kitchen

I guess this kitchen is more modern than traditional, but I thought it was worth sharing. In a narrow space the more light you can get the better. I love the sleek marble slab backsplash.

Love the classic use of subway tile as a backsplash in this elegant modern kitchen.

    kitchen with tile backsplash

This kitchen may be large, but the tile backsplash, wood hutch, and country table and chairs keep it cozy.

I don’t know if this is from a kitchen, but this shot was so pretty I thought it worth sharing.  The cabinetry and wood paneling is gorgeous!

A refreshing change for bedroom design

I’ve noticed a lot of bedrooms these days where the bed is placed directly under the window.  What do you think of this look?
Solid neutrals mixed with patterned accents and shapely antique nightstands make the perfect case for how wonderful mixing and matching can be.:

Is it just the placement of the room and where the window’s fall or is there actually something to it that I don’t know?

Did you know it was actually bad Feng Shui to put your bed under a window? It’s said that at night, your body needs protection and strong support to do it’s best regeneration. But what do homeowners with beds under there window have to say about it?
Some say it’s the only way to balance out the room. Given the size or shape of their room, it’s the only place the bed fits.
Other’s say it’s refreshing to wake up with natural light shinning on them. It seems to me, like that would be a lovely alarm clock!

    Glamorous Industrial apartment

The apartment below is a fresh mix of industrial style meets glamorous.

It comes from Heart Home magazine

“From the studio of Jaime Beriestain, this renovated apartment celebrates its industrial roots but has more than a touch of added luxury thrown in. It was originally an office but after its sympathetic transformation into a sophisticated living space it now has a warm, timeless and contemporary ambiance. ”

    glamorous industrial

Love all of the natural light in this space, the neutrals are a breath of fresh air too.

    glamorous industrial

The kitchen is a bit dark for me, but I still appreciate it.

The clean lines and copper make this bathroom glamorous even though other elements are very industrial.

  • 4 Intangibles That Make Your Home More Appealing

4 Intangibles That Make Your Home More Appealing

It’s easy to see a return on your investment for tangible home improvements such as painting or remodeling a bathroom or kitchen. It’s more difficult to put a value on intangible things such as lighting, mood, and use of space. However, these aspects of your home are as essential to your enjoyment, and perhaps even to resale value, as most tangible improvements. Here are four intangibles that will make your home more appealing.

    Lighting

    mood lighting

    via mydomaine.com

Mood lighting is as important to your home as is functional lighting. When in the kitchen cutting vegetables for your Thai curry dinner, you need to be able to see what you’re doing and read the cookbook on the counter. But when sitting at the dining room table enjoying your freshly prepared meal with your family, you don’t need direct lighting glaring down on your dish. Think about mood versus function in your home, and do what you can to still be practical while giving your home that cozy feel. Just changing out some light bulbs to a lower wattage might help.

    comfortable living room

    Comfort

A consistent and natural temperature in your home is imperative to your comfort, and it’s one of those intangibles that will make a huge difference in the way your home feels. You don’t want Grandma to visit and have to bring her parka along to stay comfortable. A reliable and energy-efficient HVAC system that enables you to maintain a steady temperature and control humidity is essential to your well-being.

    Fragrance

Have you ever stepped into someone’s home and had your nostrils assaulted by a foul smell? Your home’s fragrance is so important that real estate agents often instruct sellers to bake cookies or light vanilla-scented candles to make their homes more appealing to potential buyers. Don’t overdo it, though. Some people are sensitive to overpowering scents, so keep it subtle.

    Flow

    flow

    via Instagram

Good flow and use of space are other important intangibles that will make your home more appealing. For instance, no one wants to go up two flights of stairs to unload groceries. And the pantry should be in the kitchen, not in the basement. At the minimum, there should be one bathroom for every two occupants. Feng shui is also becoming a popular trend. It’s an ancient Chinese art and concept established more than 3,000 years ago. It shows people how to balance the energies and flow in any space to promote good fortune and blessings for the people living in it.

An inviting and memorable home will make you feel proud. And when visitors compliment you on your living space, it gives you a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, when you spend time on the important intangibles of your home, they can actually add value. The bonus benefit to having a home that is pleasing to guests is that it’s more alluring to you, as well. So, the next time you want to spruce up your home, don’t forget to spend time on the intangibles that will make your house appealing.

  • Modern Farmhouse: An amazing transformation

    Modern Farmhouse: An amazing transformation

    Modern Farmhouse

Believe it or not this sprawling farmhouse started out as a run-down cottage with a green metal roof and no upstairs windows.  The owner, Michelle Colbert, still saw her vision in the ramshackle property, and all of her hard work resulted in the modern farmhouse of her dreams.

The stables are connected to the home via the kitchen!  They have 8 horses, 11 goats, and 30 chickens.

The great room features gorgeous beams, white plank walls, and amazing natural light.  Layered rugs keep the space warm.

I really like the pops of color found throughout the house, like the cobalt blue wall in the upstairs lounge.

Wall Inspiration: Walls that Make A Statment

    Wall Inspiration

Lately my eyes have been drawn to some great rooms that are making a statement and I am loving it! Whether they are bold, classy, or just downright elegant, it is nice to see someone take a chance and make something beautiful out of it.

This wallpaper would not be an immediate first choice for me but it definitely does make you stop and stare! Seeing it in this room really makes me love it more! If you can’t commit to a whole wall in wallpaper, consider some wall decals or smaller wall decorations from a resource like https://americansignletters.com/.

A wall of windows is always eye-catching. The bold choice of black makes it stand out even more and I think it was a great choice.

Another non traditional wall paper in a room you wouldn’t expect! Since bathrooms are small I tend to do with less is more in these areas but since the wallpaper has a lot of white space it really works here! I also like the simplicity of the color scheme.

Upholstery tacks are often seen on furniture, seeing it as a wall decor statement is something I’ve never considered.

Modern kitchen: A modern spin on Shaker style in this stunning kitchen

    Modern Kitchen

This kitchen caught my eye instantly.  I love the clean aesthetic of Shaker style, but I also love the finishes and materials in modern design.  This kitchen from DeVol marries the two.  You’ll also be surprised to know that this modern kitchen isn’t in LA or the Hamptons, it’s in the Hertfordshire countryside of England.

    Modern Kitchen

The pale herringbone parquet with a limed finish are probably my favorite part of the space. I also really like the contrasting island and cabinetry.

    Modern Kitchen

Even though this kitchen has a cool, calm rustic feel, it is in the coach house of a Victorian family home.

As you can tell, light plays a huge factor in the space.  The understated pendants don’t take away from the amazing natural light from the skylights.
