  • The Height of Chic: Spaces that make you say “Oh, la la!”

The Height of Chic: Spaces that make you say “Oh, la la!”

I had the honor this week of writing a guest post for the fabulous Julie of Belle Maison and Modern Chic Home.  Below is the post:

Every girl needs a little glam right?  Even though I work from home, I still try to put on a little make up or some gorgeous shoes from time to time. The same goes for your abode – neglect it long enough and it shows.  Even if the glam you give your home is small, it can go a long way – and you and your space will look and feel fabulous for it

A little (or big) pop of bright color in an otherwise “sensible” room screams style and class.

There are two handy tricks for making a space look luxe in this room.  The large gallery canvas adds edge and sophistication, as do the matching sconces.

A wallpaper or paint job that combines matte and gloss finishes adds instant elegance.  Even a room with basic furnishings will look stunning.

You can’t go wrong with a little touch of metallic either, like these gold dipped goblets and the table base…

  • The glamorous interiors of Schuyler Samperton

The glamorous interiors of Schuyler Samperton

It is always such a treat when I’m introduced to an interior designer whose work I haven’t seen before. It doesn’t happen very often, which is why I’m really excited to share with you Schuyler Samperton. She’s an LA based designer with a cool modern twist on traditional decorating. I’m sure some of you do know her work – and even if you’ve seen it before, I imagine it’s just as beautiful to look at the second…, third…, fourth time around…

Pops of pink and turquoise balance out the visual heaviness of the dark wood beams

I would never think to put together that rug that table, with those curtains and that striped chair.  It’s a very unexpected blend, and I like that it looks like the furnishings and decor was collected over time as opposed to items purchased just to match.

The two below images are from the home of model Carolyn Murphy, which was featured in March’s vogue!

    Those wood floors are heaven!

  • A Glamorous apartment in a historic art nouveau building

A Glamorous apartment in a historic art nouveau building

A Glamorous apartment full of feminine touches

This glamorous apartment belongs to decorator and TV presenter Ana Antunes, and is located in Chiado, Lisbon’s fashion district. I feel like this apartment speaks to the girly girl in all of us who wants to feel luxurious and pampered in every room of your house. Tiffany blues, mirrored furnishings, pastels, and opulent decor are found throughout this stunning space.

The deep, tall windows in this room are to-die-for.

If you couldn’t tell, Ana loves all things Tiffany blue.

I always try to use decor that has special meaning to me, just like Ana has showcased one of her mother’s paintings here.

So true and so simple “Always believe your instincts and emotions.  If you love something a lot, stick with it because you won’t get tired of it easily”

I’ve made the mistake of really liking something “of the moment.”  Even though I might sincerely like the look, I don’t always wait to see if I like it for an extended period, enough to make the commitment to it in my home.

Love all the artwork throughout her home.

  • House Tour: The golden age of Hollywood, a glamor girl’s dream…

House Tour: The golden age of Hollywood, a glamor girl’s dream…

Home feeling a little lackluster? This space by Sarah Gilbane should inspire some ideas for adding a little glam back in your home…

The glossy stripes on the wall add glitz, while the grasscloth on the ceiling warm the space up a bit…

The pendants are feminine, but not too girly

Some garden stools add a bit of Chinoiserie to the more restrained library space.

The bedroom’s color palette is what really makes the room traditional Hollywood glam.  Pink, black, and white…what’s more starlett than that?

  • Liveable rooms full of attainable glamor…

Liveable rooms full of attainable glamor…

This light-filled kitchen stays humble but pretty with simple, classic cabinets, and simple light fixtures.

A dark neutral adds instant elegance

This room is literally brought to life with plants.

I ADORE this bedroom. The bedding adds a lot of glamor, which is kept down-to-earth with a neutral, solid rug.

This room is very mid-century mod, but it doesn’t feel overly gimmicky to me.

If you’re scared of bold color or pattern – do it in a small space like an entryway or powder room first. I tend to think “big impact” is more interesting in small spaces anyway.

How have you added a little glam to your home while still keeping it liveable and low-maintenance?

  • Feminine, glamorous, sweet & pretty – what our homes could look like if he didn’t hate pink

Feminine, glamorous, sweet & pretty – what our homes could look like if he didn’t hate pink

Don’t get me wrong – I wouldn’t trade my man for the world, but sometimes…don’t you just want to paint your bedroom pale pink? Or drink your tea out of a gold rimmed cup and saucer everyday? Well, those of us who have to consider the men in our homes when making design choices can live vicariously through these ladies who have the freedom to make their homes as feminine as they like. I swear I can smell the perfume emanating from some of these. Enjoy!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this bedroom. Isn’t the bed amazing?!? It’s from the loft of lingerie designer Jessie Zinkie, who’s decorating philosophy is that “…of course, everything must be soft and comfortable.”

A beautiful montage from the desk of Jolene Ballard, part of the interior design Domicile ID.

What a sumptuous office chair…who thought an office chair could be sumptuous?

So, turns out a man does share this bed with Jolene. God bless him – I love symmetrical nightstands – but I don’t think Chris would tolerate me being so anal for one minute.

Isn’t this pretty and sweet mint green bedroom just the epitome of femininity? I had a mint green bedroom at one point and I found the color to be very soothing.

What do you think? Is your home as feminine as you like it or do you have to tone it down for your man?

Chic, Glamorous, Gorgeous – Don’t miss these two houses

Keeping up with a blog on a daily basis is tough. But when I see pics like these – along with the amazing and kind feedback I get from readers – it keeps me motivated! Enjoy!

These images below feature the handiwork of Lee Kleinhelter from Pieces

    GREAT headboard

    Some must-reads from Lee

I like the contrast of the sleek white console and the rough natural texture of the cork lamps

Eames and Hermes – you can’t go wrong with two timeless classics. Notice how she painted the trim a slightly darker white than the walls?

The home below is from a Lonny Mag staff member, Ellie Somerville

Great wallpaper! Great Rothko too 🙂

A good use of space here- Ellie made a home office in her bedroom. The desk can also double as a nightstand.

  • Chic and glamorous – but not too over the top. A designers portfolio

Chic and glamorous – but not too over the top. A designers portfolio

I get tons of emails introducing the work of designers, but I am super glad I took the time to check out Rachel Reider’s portfolio. Her work is chic and glamorous, but it’s not so over the top that it’s impossible to believe anyone lives there. I also like her use of neutrals paired with bright accents.

I normally don’t feature children’s rooms, but I really liked this one

    *swoon* great staircase and entry

I ADORE this dining room. The cozy arrangement, the elegant fireplace

  • Oh, beautiful Paris…

    Oh, beautiful Paris…

It’s not a new notion, Paris is beautiful, romantic, and has a wonderful touch of old-world that I don’t think is going away soon (which is for the best)! Recently my friend got me a great gift – “Taschen’s Paris ~ Hotels, Restaurants & Shops,” and what I love about it is the inside look it gives you to beautiful Paris. I think you’ll agree.
