Reading nooks perfect for a cloudy day

This weekend we saw some sun, but the DC area has been under a cloak of clouds for about 15 days now.  Usually I’ll try to post uplifting sunny gardens or light and bright house tours on rainy days, but I’ve decided to embrace it today.  So I’m coming to you today from the chaise of my sectional cuddled up with a faux fur throw.  If you can, I encourage you to enjoy the following photos in a similar fashion.

One day I will have a gorgeous antique leather arm chair.

Love the wood beams, most likely repurposed specifically for the creation of this charming reading nooks.

I love that this nook makes use of what would otherwise be underutilized hall space.

I’d either be reading or just staring out the gorgeous window.

  • Pattern Happy: Inspiration for using pattern to breathe fresh air into your home

I confess I do get a little afraid of patterns, and I imagine there are a few of you out there who feel the same way.  However, I almost always love a space that masterfully mixes patterns.  Start introducing pattern into your home by finding a few images and/or examples that you think are successful, pinpoint the “guidelines” that created success, and then apply them to your own space.

In this home pattern is even cohesively mixed throughout the home – and the exterior!  Red – in both large and small doses is the “thread” that creates the cohesion.

Sticking to a color palette (green, red, and black), and varying pattern scales are two guidelines that are help successfully mix patterns.

Bedding is a good way to get your feet wet with mixing patterns because it’s not as drastic as patterned carpet or wallpaper, though this bedroom beautifully mixes wallpaper pattern, upholstery, drapery, and bedding patterns!

If you’re still afraid, mix patterns on a smaller scale – pretty books and trays in a bookshelf or coffee table vignette can help build your pattern-mixing confidence!

    Rope Inspired Decor

If you think rope only fits with the nautical or rustic theme, you might be surprised! Rope might be one of the easiest choices for home decor in any style.

Rope comes in so many different hues, but natural is one of my favorites. There are so many ways you can use it too!
It can be as simple as a place mat or as stunning as a mirror!
I love the look of these rope hanging shelves!

    And these lights!!

How would you use rope in your home decor?

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to decor, but what if you aren’t really sure what you do and don’t like?
You won’t know what you are looking for, if you don’t look!

Don’t let budget define your style. You can find amazing pieces at affordable prices.
It might take some trial and error. Which is another reason finding items that are decent priced, gives you the opportunity to change your mind and not be upset about it!
Don’t be afraid of colors and patterns. It’s okay to mix and match! Designers do it all the time.
And lastly, your preference doesn’t have to be labeled. You can be contemporary, classic, modern, elegant, rustic, and eclectic. Just be you!

Bungalow: An emag I’m loving full of fresh decorating inspiration

Finding a new mag or website for house tours and design ideas is always exciting.  Bungalow is a great emag I found with a lot of house tours.

I  LOVE the two large prints over the sofa.

This nursery is cute and sophisticated.

Balancing a simplistic but eclectic style

If you have a tendency to collect beautiful things and want to show them off, that doesn’t mean your home can’t be simplistic as well. Here’s some great inspiration on pairing the two styles together:

Finally – the weather is starting to warm up and the sun is coming out!  While my home is still a construction zone – it is nice to imagine and gather inspiration for how I will decorate once all of our new flooring is down!

  • Light Bright Kitchen

    Light Bright Kitchen

Light and bright does not mean you have to do head to toe white! If you are looking for a nice bright kitchen without it being completely whitewashed, here’s a little inspiration that can help:
Ilot central, carreaux de ciment, chêne clair, fenêtres arrondies... and so on...
A light natural wood will never steer you wrong! It goes great with the light and airy feel and looks clean too.
Not into wood? A simple gray or tan can keep your kitchen nice and bright and pair’s nicely with white accents for a timeless feel.

If you are dying for a little color stay on the pale end of things. this light blue is almost white but it’s not! Paired with white upper cabinets and a blue back splash make this kitchen feel colorful, light, and airy.

If you have more of an eclectic style you can use a variation of different natural hues that tie together to complete that bright kitchen you desire.

If dark hues are more your style, go big on lighting and natural lighting. Nothing is brighter than the sun!
  • Truly fresh and inspired spaces

    Truly fresh and inspired spaces

I strive for a home that is thoughtfully decorated and put together, but at the same time not so styled and polished that it doesn’t look like anyone lives there.  It can be a hard balance to strike though, but if you take the time to pick out pieces, colors, and textures that are meaningful to you and fit your lifestyle, your home will feel beautiful to you even if there are shoes left by the door and mail piled on the counter.  Here are some spaces that I think are really beautiful, but have enough personality to shine even if someone really lives there!

Even though this space is small, seating is ample for a family, just scaled down to fit in the space.

I don’t iron my sheets either, though this be is prettier than mine with the gorgeous emerald shams and quilt!

This space reminds me of the courtyard rooms in Morocco.  What a treat to have that skylight!
