  • A Space of My Own: Inspirational Ideas for Home Offices, Craft Rooms, and Studies

A Space of My Own: Inspirational Ideas for Home Offices, Craft Rooms, and Studies

I wanted to share with you today a handful of my favorite images from a book I was recently sent to review, “A Space of My Own.” The book is by Caroline Clifton-Mogg, and is a great read for anyone who is thinking of setting up a home office, or who needs to overhaul the one they have now.

Here’s the book description: “For some of us it’s a small desk in the corner of a kitchen or living room, for others it’s a self contained home office, but we all need a space we can call our own – where we can catch up on emails, tackle household admin or enjoy some crafting. In A Space of My Own, Caroline Clifton-Mogg shows you how to make the most of your personal work space. Part 1, explores The Elements that make up a successful work area: from choosing the right Furniture and Lighting, to attractive Storage and Decoration to create an environment that truly brings out the creativity in you. Part 2 is about The Spaces as a whole, showing examples of Home Offices, Shared Work Spaces, Sewing & Craft Rooms and Space for Children & Teens. Featuring innovative case studies, it provides ideas and inspiration which can be easily translated into your own home. Because personal work space should be both practical and inspiring, and, quite simply, the more it is designed around your needs and tastes, the more inspired you will be.”

The style of home offices featured in this book vary greatly, from vintage country to sleek modern. So, there is eye candy for everyone.

One of my favorite spaces in the book – I love the table in the middle of the room – great for working on large projects that can be accessed from all sides, and I LOVE the large industrial light on the makeshift pulley system.

A cute little space for note-taking, bill paying, and keeping up with correspondences.

The natural light from the french windows makes for a great work environment.

I might get too distracted is I had a view as pretty as this one right in front of me!

If your work requires a lot of keeping archive of materials or files, get all of your storage in the same color and style to keep things visually tidy.

    Love the glass cabinets!

If you work from home a lot, or want inspiration for a home office or craft room, definitely check out “A Space of My Own

    Interiors that embody today’s “traditional”

I think the below interiors really capture what I might consider today’s “traditional” home. These are all real homes, so they aren’t the staged, sometimes unlivable, concepts we see in magazines.

What do you think? How would you describe today’s “traditional” home?

  • April’s Monthly Storage Plan: The Laundry Room

April’s Monthly Storage Plan: The Laundry Room

So, I’m really late getting you April’s agenda from BHG’s “Month by Month Storage Plan.”
But I promise you this one is pretty painless – but can make a big difference in saving you time every week doing your laundry. Here is BHG’s suggestions for creating a streamlined, efficient laundry room…

Sorting Baskets. Place a three-compartment bin or basket in a closet or open shelf in your laundry room (look at home or office supply stores for options). Separate clothing to be repaired, dry-cleaned, and donated.

Laundry baskets make great sorting bins that are easily moved about. You can download BHG’s free Laundry Labels here. (You may have to sign in or create a profile before they let you do this – just a head’s up)

Not all of us have the luxury of separate rooms or dedicated spaces for every task or hobby, so a well planned out utility room can handle multiple purposes. This room handles laundry, and crafts such as wrapping… notice the rolls of wrapping paper. A surface over the washer and dryer provides space for crafting. Lots of baskets and bins provide storage for supplies.

    • Keep Detergent Handy. Fill plastic beverage dispensers with laundry detergent, softener, and other liquid laundry additives. Hang a set of plastic measuring cups nearby from a cup hook.

    via House to Home
Liquids and powders obviously look prettier in glass bottles or tins, but it might not really be practical for everyone. Also – if you forget instructions easily save the usage labels for products.

    • Drying Rack. Mount a drying rack or double towel bar near your washer as a spot for air-drying clean sweaters or rugs.

    via BHG
This is a great example of the well organized laundry room. It’s not an actual “room” so the owner has cleverly installed curtains to hide the area when not in use. And even though the space is small, a foldable drying rack still fits in nicely. Ballard designs has some great drying racks similar to this one.

Make a Catch-all for Ironing Supplies. Convert a silverware caddy into a stain-treating or ironing kit. Fill with small size cleaners, spray starches, and linen waters. Be sure to include essential tools such as brushes, dry-cleaning pads, and collar points.

Mounting planters or containers can also serve as catchalls for any other cleaning supplies you need on hand.

Below are some more laundry rooms to inspire you –

    Gorgeous home offices

Working from home, it is VITAL to like your work space. It can’t have too many distractions and must a comfortable place to sit for long periods of time.

Here are a few yummy home offices I really like:

A nice space for a seamstress. I can’t wait until I have the space for my sewing machine to live permanently. Now I always have to take it out and put it away when I use it.

I ADORE this home office – a desk with generous surface area, and inspiration pinned all around
