Bohemian Interiors – A perfect vibe for summer

There is something about Bohemian Interiors that just say summer to me.  It’s most likely the laid-back vibe that is also akin to summer at the beach.

Interior Design Tips for Adding Versatility

    Interior Design Tips

No sooner have we got the home looking perfect and summery than the days start getting shorter, and thoughts start to turn towards Thanksgiving. The temptation is to completely change the décor again, but that is not always practical. Here, we take a look at four design tips for adding versatility to your living space and making it perfect whatever the season.

    Start with the doors

Every room has them, but they are often the last thing you think about when it comes to interior décor. The fact is, the choice of door sets a tone for the look of the entire room. A light wood finish gives a fresh, airy sense in the summer months, yet is still warm and inviting when the weather turns colder.

In a smaller room, white is a great choice, as it gives a better feeling of space, but be careful in larger rooms, as it can end up feeling cold and stark. That does not mean white should automatically be ruled out, but think about combining it with soft furnishings and perhaps wall hangings.

There is a huge variety of doors available, why not have a look here to see what would work best in your home?

    Soft furnishings

When it comes to setting a theme without spending too much time or money, there is nothing like focusing on the soft furnishings. Everyone loves cushions, and it is so easy to change the covers from something pastel and bright in the summer to something warmer and darker in the winter.

However, it does not have to stop there. Also think about throws and blankets. In the summer, a white or stonewashed style throw over the back of the sofa gives that seaside feel. As the weather gets colder, change it for something thick and textured – perfect to snuggle under on a cold night.

    Accessories

A wooden basket is one of the most versatile accessories your room can have. In the summer, use it to store newspapers or magazines, and in the winter, it can become a log basket. Even if you don’t have an open fire, it is a great accessory to give your room that feel of being a sanctuary from the cold weather.

Think about what goes up on the walls too – those seascapes or wicker hangings that look great in the summer can be replaced by something warm and textured in the winter months. It is the work of five minutes, but makes a big difference.

    Try a little Feng Shui

Some people go for years without moving a piece of furniture, but we say you should redesign the layout according to the seasons. In summer, you want an airy, more minimalist feel, and if you have large windows looking out onto the world, these should be the focus of your attention.

In winter, bring things together. Create more of an inward focus, on either the fireplace or, of course, the TV. It will feel like a completely different room.

    House tours from Domino

An oldie but a goodie – a classic Domino post!

As part of my ongoing series of posts honoring our late friend Domino, I now bestow upon you some lovely house tours we all came to look forward to every month. *sigh* Enjoy.

Kathryn Ireland’s rustic style home. I love the humble bathroom, and the console in the kitchen with the dishes stowed underneath.

Actress Julianne Moore’s stab at interior decorating. I like some of the choices she made – not all my style, but still pretty. I like the piece of drift wood on the radiator.

A rebuilt green home in New Orleans.

Domino style director Dara’s lovely white bedroom.

I love Amanda Peet’s down-to-earth, bohemian home. It’s so ethereal and filled with interesting, meaningful objects. I also love that you can tell that she had a hand in it. She didn’t just hire some designer to come in and make it look like a movie star’s home.

  • Turning Your Bedroom into a Sanctuary

Turning Your Bedroom into a Sanctuary

In today’s always on world, finding time for yourself to just relax and chill can be difficult. As well as being short of time, most people live with other family members, which can make it hard to get away from everyone and everything.

However, most of us still have the luxury of having our own bedroom. This is important because it is a space that can easily be turned into a proper sanctuary. The fact that a bedroom is still seen as a private space means that it is somewhere you can go to be alone, and do your own thing.

Choose a restful style of decor

You need to resist the temptation to decorate your bedroom in a jazzy style. It is far better to opt for a more muted style of decor, which creates a more calming and relaxing ambience.

    Add a chair or sofa

If you have the space, invest in a comfortable chair, and footrest, or a small sofa. You will be surprised by just how much you use it.

    Get a nice headboard

For some reason, headboards went out of fashion, but, for 2017, they are back. Most retailers are once again stocking big, decorative, padded headboards. This is great news for you, because it means that your bed will once again be somewhere you can comfortably sit up and read.

    Let the light in

Now I know this is going to sound strange, but you really need to let as much natural light into your bedroom as possible. Being able to see the view will lift your spirits, and help you to rebalance after a frenetic day.

If you enjoy having breakfast in bed, or reading in your room during the day you will be thankful of the natural light. The trick with bedrooms is to install good quality curtains, or blinds, so that you can keep the light out until you want it.

It is also important to install good lighting in your bedroom. You want to be able to see what you are doing when you get dressed, and have enough light to be able to read comfortably. However, at times, you will want to dim the lights to create a more romantic, or relaxing ambience.

    Add a touch of luxury

In sanctuary bedrooms, luxury bedspreads are always a good idea. They make the room look fantastic, as well as feel great against your skin.

    A place to pamper yourself

The bedroom is the perfect place to enjoy beauty treatments. If you have enough space, set aside a cupboard, or chest of drawers to store everything that you need. Having everything you need readily to hand will encourage you to treat yourself to a foot spa, and face pack on a regular basis.

    Wire your bedroom for sound

If you find listening to music relaxing, consider investing in a good quality sound system for your bedroom. In a crowded house that may mean buying a set of wireless headphones, which will allow you to listen to the TV or your music system when everyone else is in bed, and sound asleep.

  • Just beautiful rooms to start your week off right

Just beautiful rooms to start your week off right

No specific topic today, just beautiful rooms to inspire this rather gloomy morning (at least here in MD).  Granted, it’s also not Monday, but I also wasn’t particularly productive yesterday.  So, without further ado, I bring you some interior design eye candy and inspiration.

    white kitchen with natural light

What a great kitchen to wake up to every morning.  The natural light and open concept is so nice.  The glass front cabinets mimic the windows.

    elegant bedroom with tufted headboard

This bedroom in silver and purple is all about the elegance.  Of course, what is more elegant than a purple velvet tufted headboard?

    white room with arm chair

This is more of an art shot but the white and gray, wainscoting, and architectural details are really stunning.

    breakfast nook with windows

A humble but cheerful breakfast nook looks like such an ideal way to start the morning.  What I wouldn’t do for a little greenery out the window these days!

Staircase with console and gallery wall

The blue Chinese stools and green velvet couch add elegance through jewel tones to the staircase. I like the gallery wall with tiny pictures too.

  • Fall Anthropologie that we love

    Fall Anthropologie that we love

Fall 2016 is about nature, layering textures, and pattern

Pink dining room chairs?  Don’t mind if I do!  And out that window?  That’s beautiful Idaho.

The new catalog features a bohemian mid-century modern fusion, which I like

While I like a lot of Anthropologie’s furniture, I’m just as excited to see the locations they shoot in – they always find places with amazing bones!

Wow that molding!  And the herringbone floors!

Anthorpologie is also really into florals and patterns in both there wallpapers and upholstery.  While I like it, I don’t know if I could live with it long term in my house…

    Yes, please.

Love the velvet pink sofa with the neutral textured rug.

This tapestry headboard is pretty amazing.

More from Idaho.  Whatever cabin or lodge they found to stage in looks absolutely beautiful.

What do you think of Anthropologie’s offerings for Fall?

  • Beautiful rooms that are eclectic, artisan, and bohemian

Beautiful rooms that are eclectic, artisan, and bohemian

I know we see this look around a lot now, but I can’t help it – I love it.  White kitchen, oriental rug, and clean hardware.  Jealous.

I think this would make a great guest room.  The amazing plank ceiling, antique bed, and pretty textiles hanging from the ceiling.

How fantastic are the bones of this room?  From the moldings to the amazing tile floors it looks like a work of art!

Love all the textures and objects that  look like they were found on fun adventures.

What a cool space to spend rainy afternoon reading.  I think this is actually a girl’s room though!

Another room with amazing bones.  One day I hope to have a home with windows like that!

    Modern bohemian interiors

    Bohemian home inspiration

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend.  Here in Maryland we were blessed with beautiful weather!

The appeal of Bohemian interiors for me is that they look lived in, and don’t rely on being perfect and expensive to look good.  I also love mixing textures and infusing elements inspired by nature into my space.

    via Disc Journal

Bohemian style also doesn’t have to be cluttered or busy.  When I think “bohemian” I also think “ease,”and this humble but beautiful room says that to me.

Bohemian baby!  That wallpaper is so cute, but will also grow with baby.
    New Arrivals, Inc.

I love how cozy this home library/dining room is.  Looks like a place where I could sit for a few hours and read or draw.
    via House and Garden

If you love bohemian interiors it also doesn’t mean you have to surround yourself in colors, one of my favorite looks is actually monochrome or white with layers of different textures and patterns piled on!

I’m always impressed by those who can really mix and match pattern!
