Use Wood Paneling In Your Home In 2024: 9 Ideas To Inspire

In the last couple of years, designers and DIYers have been incorporating natural materials and textures into interior spaces, and deciding to use wood paneling in your home aligns well with this trend. Additionally, there’s a continued appreciation for the warmth and character that wood can bring to a room. I probably don’t need to tell you that wood paneling had been experiencing a resurgence in popularity.

Use wood paneling in your home to add warmth, texture, and a touch of sophistication.

Here are some ideas on how to use wood paneling in your home:

    • Accent Wall:
      • Create a focal point in a room by installing wood paneling on one wall. This can be the wall behind a bed in the bedroom, the wall behind a sofa in the living room, or even in a dining area.
      • Consider using reclaimed or distressed wood for a rustic look, or go for sleek, modern panels for a more contemporary feel.
    • Wainscoting:
      • Install wood paneling on the lower half of the walls to create wainscoting. This is a classic and elegant way to use wood paneling, especially in dining rooms, hallways, or entryways.

    • Ceiling Treatment:
      • Consider using wood paneling on the ceiling to add interest and warmth. This is particularly effective in rooms with high ceilings, as it can help create a cozier atmosphere.
    • In the Kitchen:
      • Install wood paneling on the kitchen island or on the backsplash to add warmth to the kitchen space. Consider using a durable wood or sealing the panels for protection against moisture.
    • Home Office or Library:
      • Create a cozy and inviting home office or library by covering the walls with wood paneling. This can enhance the room’s atmosphere, making it a comfortable space for work or relaxation.

    • Built-in Shelving:
      • Incorporate wood paneling into built-in shelving or cabinets. This not only adds texture but also provides a beautiful backdrop for displaying books, art, or other decorative items.
    • Mix with Other Materials:
      • Combine wood paneling with other materials like metal, glass, or stone to create a balanced and visually appealing design.

    • Lighting Considerations:
      • Pay attention to lighting. Wood paneling can absorb light, so it’s essential to ensure that the room remains well-lit. Consider using a combination of ambient and task lighting to highlight the wood texture.
    • Choose the Right Finish:
      • The finish of the wood paneling can significantly impact the overall look. Whether you prefer a natural, stained, or painted finish, choose one that complements the style and color scheme of your home.

Remember to balance the use of wood paneling with other design elements in your home for a cohesive and well-thought-out look. And research the pros and cons of using wood. Experimenting with different styles, finishes, and placements can help you find the perfect fit for your space.

A 600 sq. ft. California Cabin Retreat

Stocked with finds from budget go-to’s like west elm and ikea, this rustic retreat was made beautiful on a modest budget. Even the cabin (it’s a rental) was found on craigslist!

The cabin was built in the 1970’s, but they’ve managed to make the wool paneling look fresh.

The chairs are by West Elm.  I have been scouring Craigslist for a similar table – I love it!

LOVE the chevron poufs – they add a punch of mod to the space.

I could read on this couch all afternoon.

Any retreat needs a well stocked bar. I am a coffee girl above a cocktail girl…so I might have a fancy coffee bar instead.

Warm and rustic spaces to inspire you to cozy up for winter

Well, we’re expectinh highs of 78 here in Maryland, but we all know winter will be here in the blink of an eye.  Whether you’re a fan of winter or not, these rustic cozy interiors will make evenings indoor a toasty treat.

A glamorous modern chandelier and sleek upholstered headboard nicely contrast the dark wook paneling.

A really cool live edge wood headboard, and wool and fur textures make this the perfect cold weather retreat.

This ceiling has so much vision.  I never would have thought to panel the ceiling in wood planks! All of the textures in the bedding are nice too!

How gorgeous is this hallway and staircase with wood beams?

This kitchen is AMAZING.  Sleek cabinetry and square tiles paired with rough hewn beams, wideplank floors, and that island?!?

Just add a fireplace to this bathroom and it’s perfect for winter nights!

Modern Rustic: A style that works for small spaces and large

I love modern rustic.  It blends two things I love: the clean, airiness of modern, and the warm, organic elements of rustic.

This space is so amazing it’s absurd!  Can you imagine waking up and drinking your coffee to that view?!?!?  I hope someone actually lives here and it’s not just a vacation home used 2 weeks out of the year.

I love the the hardware on the doors and the wide entrance hall.

    Rustic Bathroom

This bathroom might be small, but the materials and glass shower make it feel luxe.

This kitchen is small, but has an airy feeling because it is open to the dining and living room.  Natural wood tones bring in the rustic feeling.

I love the shaker simplicity of this dining area.  A wide wrap-around porch is a dream of mine.  Here in my part of Maryland it would need to be screened against mosquitos!

LOVE the wood paneling – something I never thought I’d say.

This room has an austerity to it that I love.  Add a wood burning stove, some friends, and you have many cozy nights…

  • Country interiors that are clean and fresh, not cluttered and frilly!

Country interiors that are clean and fresh, not cluttered and frilly!

I was born and raised on a large farm in an old colonial farmhouse.  I will always love old wide plank floors, exposed wood beams, and wavy windows. That being said, I have never been a fan of “country” decorating.  Ruffled valances, roosters, chintz and faux chipping paint make me cringe.  Country can be fresh and clean and beautiful – see below…

Gotta have your florals or toile? Then keep the drapery, linens and upholstery tailored and crisp.

Farmhouse Bedroom by South West Interior Designers & Decorators Sims Hilditch

Keep your light upholstery for a room like the bedroom – any room close to the house entrances is more subject to the dirt brought in from gardening and livestock.

I would also save white cabinetry for a bathroom – the kitchen of a farmhouse gets far too much traffic!

I would never have the heart to touch these floors or beams, so keeping the linens and walls white keeps the space fresh.

While I LOVE white cabinetry, it’s very tough to keep clean in a farmhouse.  Between farm dogs and dusty boots, go with a cream or off-white if you can’t do dark cabinetry.

Ranchers with low ceilings need all the light they can get.  A white ceiling, a mirrored wall, and glass doors make the most of the light.

LOVE this too.  You don’t need ruffled valances to decorate this space.  The treetops are more than enough.

  • To paint or not to paint? The wood trim conundrum

To paint or not to paint? The wood trim conundrum

More than once I have been posed the question of how to make a home look fresh and modern when it is accented – or filled -with wood trim.  These days magazines are full of homes with doors, trims, moulding, banisters, and mantles all in white.  I won’t lie, I love white, but I also love original details in a home.  If you just can’t bear the thought of painting over the wood trim in your home – put down the paintbrush!  Choose other aspects of the home and decor wisely, and your home can still look modern and fresh, not dowdy.

Gorgeous.  Notice the modern, crisp lines of the furniture and armchair?  The sleek drapery solution?  The chrome and glass brought in by the coffee table and the lamp?  All of these items counterbalance the dark, heavy feeling of the wood trim.  Fill this room with brocades and velvet drapes in burgundy and hunter greens and you have dowdy and dark.  Use the above picture as inspiration and you have something really charming and unique.

Above is an example of using stark contrast to make a room feel modern.  If you have really dark trim, try using creams (cool creams)  and whites in your space and call attention to the trim.  I wouldn’t recommend this if you have particularly small rooms, because it’s contrast that has more effect on whether a room feels large or small, not whether you paint it dark or light…IMHO.  This all adds up for a really glamorous feel. The glass chandelier adds a modern flair.

The above is probably my favorite example.  It’s another illustration of mixing modern elements, like the sofa and artwork, and paying homage to the original bones of the home – the fireplace surround and the moulding. The navy and honey color of the wood looks super chic.

Below are three other shots of the same home, a Bed Stuy brownstone.  I think it’s gorgeous.

I would shave my head for those doors.  Wouldn’t hesitate.
I highly recommend reading this post by Jessica of Decor Adventures  (Also the source of the two images above). She has done a great job making her home look fresh and modern while preserving the integrity of her 114 year old abode.

Another option – if you are a bit bolder, is to go for unconventional colors.  The bright rug and yellow-green chesterfield add enough funkiness to keep the space modern and not stuffy.

Lovely kitchens that will inspire you

Once the weather gets chilly we spend even more time in the kitchen baking up warm goodies. So I thought it’d be appropriate to post some kitchens which get me excited for the upcoming cooking/baking season – even though I primarily just eat the food – and someone else makes it. All of these images are from our dearly departed Domino.

What do you think of the back splash and counter?
