Why you shouldn’t neglect your hallways

It’s not a new idea to utilize your hallways and not let them be wasted space, but some – myself included- are still guilty of this.  Now that the weather is cooling we will be spending more time indoors, therefore freeing up time to show your halls some love.

A lot of the examples below are foyers, but entryways often pose similar design conundrums as halls, and similar solutions.

I love that this hallway is so glamorous but gets cheeky with the addition of a giant framed chalkboard.

Our hallway is narrower than this one, no kidding.  Wainscoting and a lovely collection of framed art give this hallway a studied feel.

So, this hallway is all about amazing bones.  The vaulted ceiling is so pretty.  The horizontal shiplap creates a sense of length.

I love a round table in the middle of an entry.  It boasts – “hey look at all the space I have!”  It is not a boast I can make.

If you have enough width in your hall to allow it, built-ins or shelves are a great way to display more than art or serve as additional storage.

Alexa Hampton’s rich and beautiful interiors

It’s Monday…ugh.  I need an interior eye candy pick-me-up.  Want to join me?

These absolutely stunning, elegant rooms are the work of Alexa Hampton.
    I LOVE this canopy fabric.

The hours I could spend on the sofas in this room perusing my art books.

The periwinkle of this room is such a pretty shade of blue.

This guest bedroom proves that little can still be luxurious.
Fantastic built-in bookshelves even line the hallways

How about that crown molding.  I really liked the tasseled drapes too.

What do you think of the elegant home by Alexa Hampton?

Best Built-ins: Inspiration for adding beautiful functional storage

When I hear built-ins I usually envision more expensive custom built homes.  However, when you consider the cost of quality furniture, or any furniture for that matter, you might be surprised at the bang for your buck custom built built-ins provide.  Also consider the value it will add to your home, and that you have a storage solution perfectly suited to you and your lifestyle.

This large built-in with shelves and cabinets is wonderful because not only does it provide space to house books, but kids crafts and games can be kept in the cabinets beneath.

A dream kitchen workstation.  A desk in the kitchen would be very useful for us, but we just don’t have the space.

Built in jewelry storage?! Yes please! Not only does built in jewelry storage keep baubles untangled and dust-free, everything is visible at a glance.  Imagine being able to get out and put away your baume and mercier watch without having to wonder where it is or where it goes!

Built-ins in bedrooms aren’t as common, but I think these are a great way to store books, and showcase personal or sentimental items

This custom built-in desk is special because it’s designed in a way so it doesn’t block the amazing windows, therefore maximizing natural light.

Built-ins around a door jam really maximizes space and creates a unique way to display collections.

    Beautiful and unexpected lighting

Small spaces come with a plethora of challenges. A challenge I didn’t think of was space for lighting.  Even though our dining room and living room has been opened up into a “great room,” it’s still a great room in a 50’s rancher.  I’ve been thinking that instead of putting lamps on either side of the sofa on side tables, I would install sconces above the sofa, thus saving precious space on our small side tables.

Here are some ideas I’ve found:

  • Ideas for lighting your home

    Ideas for lighting your home

Lighting in a room can really make or break a space! Unfortunately, the lighting fixtures in my new home are as far from my style as you can get, so I have my eye out for some inspiring solutions to light my dining room, kitchen, halls, and master bath…

I’ve been scouring ebay and craigslist for a mod brass chandelier like this one to hang above my dining room table.

I’ve been crushing on sleek chrome or silver lighting in the kitchen like the fixture hanging over the island in this GORGEOUS kitchen

Lacking in natural light?  Join the club. There are a variety of light choices for any space you have in your home. What do you think of the multiple sconces used in this space?
I love how this homeowner jazzed up an affordable light fixture by winding rope around the cord.
I’m not generally a fan of recessed lighting, but done unusually I think it can add to a space.  Just make sure it’s on a dimmer!!!

Basements can be the hardest to light because there isn’t much natural light there. I like the idea they have here of using the long drapes to create the feel of a large window and using larger lights to warm up the space.  If you live in a basement apartment or spend a lot of time in your basement this is such a cool idea!
