Protecting Your Family From Holiday Hazards With Proper Insurance Plans

The holiday festivities are in full swing! From cooking indulgent foods to hosting large celebrations, and even trimming a live tree, it’s no surprise they call this the “most wonderful time of the year.”

However, what many consumers may not know is that these celebrations could actually cause great calamities if individuals don’t have the right insurance to protect themselves from numerous hazards lurking behind the scenes.

For example, if guests damaged your home during your holiday party, would your property and casualty insurance plan cover the costs? If Uncle Joe’s decision to deep fry the turkey caused a fire, would you be protected?

What if your cute little nieces and nephews flushed a toy truck down the toilet, causing the pipes to back up, and flood the downstairs? You’d probably wish you had added water damage to your protection.

Of course, situations like these make it so important for homeowners to have the proper coverage in place. But regrettably, some homeowners don’t find out until it’s too late that their coverage is insufficient.

Those that purchase plans based on price alone, without understanding the protection they are – and aren’t – gaining, could be out thousands of dollars should the unexpected happen.

However, there are some precautionary steps that homeowners can take to ensure that they have the full coverage they need without added anxiety.

    1. Sit down with your insurance agent to review all of your potential risks. Then, have them explain the coverage you have, along with coverage amounts, so you can address any gaps.
    1. Understand your Property and Casualty Coverage.

Many homeowners may not be aware of the two categories to consider, which include…

    • Basic peril: ONLY covers the specified perils in the plan, such as incidents from smoke, ice, tree damage, and theft. Anything outside of what’s outlined in writing will not be covered.
    • Broad peril: Covers a wider range of risks, such as damage caused by natural disasters, flooding, water incidents, or frozen pipes.

Moreover, when it comes to property and casualty insurance, homeowners should also ensure that they have enough coverage to replace their homes should their entire property be destroyed. This is especially important since the valuation of their home may have recently gone up, along with costs for labor and supplies.

    1. Understand your Car Insurance Coverage:

It’s important to have car insurance, whether putting extra miles on your own vehicle or driving a rental car.  While it’s mandatory for most drivers to purchase the minimum amount of auto liability insurance for their state, other types of policies can provide an extra level of protection, like…

    • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
    • Collision coverage
    • Medical payments coverage
    1. Understand how Umbrella Insurance works:

This type of insurance provides the policyholder with added protection when existing limits have been tapped out on other coverage, like your homeowners and auto policies. Umbrellas can be used for a variety of things, like property damage, slander, or personal/bodily injury.

By following these basic holiday hazard protection tips, you can avoid numerous landmines that come with insufficient coverage. An insurance broker connected to several carriers can provide you with a full breadth of options to meet your specific needs. Remember “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” during this holiday season and beyond.

Five Ways to Fund a Fabulous Christmas

Unless you’re someone who shops for Christmas gifts year-round, you’re running out of time to find the perfect presents for your friends and family. And with Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner, you may be wondering whether your bank account is ready to fund those festive free-for-alls. While some folks may have stashed away a little nest egg in a Christmas Club or designated savings account, others find themselves strapped for cash when crunch time rolls around. It might be prudent to complete an aspiration online bank review. If you’re in the latter contingent, here are few quick ways to make some extra money to be sure those stockings are stuffed and there are plenty of presents under the tree.

    Temporary side hustles

Budget guru Dave Ramsey says that for a family making $50,000 a year, a total holiday gift budget of $800 is reasonable. If you need to raise this much or more, consider taking on a side gig or temporary part-time job this Christmas season. Offering your services as rideshare driver could earn you up to $10 per hour, which adds up to about $867 a month if you can spare 20 driving hours on nights and weekends. Another way to utilize your vehicle (or bike or scooter) for extra money in your spare time is to work for a courier service delivering groceries, meals, or even alcohol for up to $25 an hour. And don’t forget about all of your local retail establishments who often advertise for extra help during the holidays; not only will you get a paycheck, but you’ll probably also enjoy a sweet employee discount.

    Online loans

Need a little more money, or don’t have time to spare? Maybe you’re planning a big get-together complete with a buffet of hors d’oeuvres, Christmas party entertainment, and a champagne fountain, but right now you’re working with a boxed wine budget. A short-term small loan might be an option. Online payday loans are quick and easy, and usually don’t impact your credit score or show up as a debt on your credit report. Plus, payments are set up to coincide with your future paydays, so you can pay back the loan when it’s convenient for you.

    Clean out your basement

Do you have any extra belongings cluttering your closets, attic, spare room, or basement? Make some extra holiday cash by selling them! That 1980s concert t-shirt you found in the back of your drawer maybe just the gift someone else has been searching for. Or Grandma’s old newspaper collection could net you enough money to buy her a nifty e-reader. Sure, you could hold an old-fashioned yard sale, but it’s much more convenient to use one of the plethora of online options, including auction sites and resale apps. And don’t forget about your local consignment shops for clothes, shoes, and handbags. Whether you want to get rid of old books, antique furniture, or video games, the quicker you get it out there for sale, the better your chances of padding your holiday budget.

    Give them your two cents

Did you know that lots of companies will pay you for your opinion? You can earn a little—and sometimes a lot of—money every time you answer an online or video survey brokered through one of the many online survey sites. For example, software development companies might be seeking real people to test a new app, or a tea manufacturer is seeking tea drinkers to share their preferences. Although you might not fit the perfect demographic for every survey, you can hedge your options by signing up for more than one survey site.

    Get some cash back

Sure, you want to save as much money as possible when you shop for the holidays, but perhaps you’re not cut out to be the coupon queen or king. Here’s a more passive way to save: shopping apps. There are tons of great options out there that will either shave cents off of your purchases, instantly refund savings from price matching, or give you credits or actual cash back when you shop at certain stores or buy particular products. So maybe these apps alone won’t fund your full holiday shopping budget, but depending upon how much you spend, what you buy, and where you shop, you just might earn yourself enough for a very happy New Year’s celebration.

How pretty is this entrance with the pumpkins and cornstalks?
The crows add a nod to the spooky season.

I love carved pumpkins I just never have the time.  These pumpkins as found on Southern Living are more sweet than scary.

I like the subtlety of this one.  The mirror and the crows makes me think of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.

Holiday Decor I Love this Year

There is something about holiday decor that just puts a bright and cheery mood in the air. I am always on the search for new ideas. Although I tend to lean towards the more simple decor, there is something stunning about a home that is decorated head to toe!
There’s something beautiful about neutral decor with the bright crisp natural green.
It seems like this is the year for reindeer and I love it!
I love to see how others set their tables for the holidays too. The cold tableware is beautiful.
Handcrafted to look like old-fashioned stockings, artisans in Nepal hand knit each of these from 100% wool. The facility they're crafted at is Fair Trade Certified, meaning that each stocking purchased directly improves the life of the artisan who makes it. A thoughtful gift!:

I love the nontraditional stockings as well. There’s something beautiful about a little personality in each stocking.

  • Preparing your home for cold weather!

Preparing your home for cold weather!

We always talk about what home decor ideas would be great for fall but what about home maintenance? Before the cold weather sets in, get your home in check with these  things:
Before it gets cold, go out and check all your outdoor lighting. Soon it will be dark earlier and you will most likely be using these lights more. Clean them up, change the bulbs, and get them prepped and ready for more use!
All you need are 2 traditional rocking chairs and a place to set your cold ice tea.....or other beverage....and rock the afternoon away.:
Simplify your porch, patio, and deck! With the leaves falling, the rain coming, the wind blowing, and soon to be snow, the less you have on your porch the better! Take away all the items that don’t do well with cold weather and keep the minimum.

Check your windows and doors! Make sure they are sealed well inside and out and close properly. Weather is one thing that can really damage a home. It’s known for mold, wood rot, and pesky bugs and animals that decide your home is where they want to be!
From Mini Manor Blog. I love this organizational station for yard and garden supplies. The table (for potting) folds down so the car can come in. The smaller tools are in the bag begin the fern and the larger tools are hanging. Soil in bigger trash can.:
Have easy access to your trash and recycle. Whether it’s in a garage or outside, make sure you have quick and easy access to it! It’s hard to keep a home clutter free and clean if you are having a hard time just getting your trash out of the house!
Minimalist TV room... Probably not dog friendly but so pretty!!:
Spring cleaning in the fall! Before the holiday’s come and it get’s so busy, get rid of all the clutter! Get your home ready for the holiday parties now. If you have time, do a deep clean! If not, just pick up all the extra pieces that are unnecessary in each room and make it feel fresh and new.

  • Martha Lights Up America

We are so excited to share these amazing new lights by Martha Stewart that you can find at Home Depot!

We had the opportunity to try out these news lights for ourselves! We are slowly getting ready for the holidays and decided to try out these new lights to see how they looked. As much as I love them, I need to run to the store and buy some more to finish the look:
They pair greatly with our other decorations.

I’ve had a traditional wreath for so long now, I am even considering getting a different one that fits with the snowflakes in the new lights!

One of my favorite things about the lights are that they are battery powered so you don’t have to worry about plugging them in, and they have a timer on them!

They were really easy to hang. We bought some 3M hooks and lined them up along the post.

Do you like traditional lights or non-traditional? Are you putting up lights for the holiday season this year?
*Disclaimer – I was given these lights as a sample but the opinions are my own!
