    Farmhouse Inspiration

It’s a dream of all (admit it, all) NYC dwellers to have a country retreat. Kathryn Windley was no exception to the rule. She was tired of her grueling hours as an art director for a Manhattan ad agencies, and was recently divorced. She added a new twist to the New Yorker turned farmer by actually marrying the realtor who found her the property a few years later on the 20-acre grounds!

This living room is kept bright and cheery by the white upholstery and brightly striped rug.

In NYC, unless you pay for a separate studio, on never has space in their apartment for a studio.
One day I hope to have the space to paint and draw again.

The barn is actually a garage they designed to look like a barn.

I adore this kitchen, and Kathryn claims the farmhouse sink is what sold her on the property.  The runner was a once a damaged full-sized carpet she had cut and bound to fit the kitchen.

Old barns converted into beautiful family homes!

Historic barns turned into functional living spaces

I spent the better part of this weekend scrubbing out my barn and stalls by hand this weekend due to a broken pressure washer, so I have barns on the brain.  Our barn is just a small metal pole barn with two stalls, but it doesn’t make it hard to imagine the amazing open concept layout someone could create with a grand old barn of wood or stone.  Here are some pretty examples I found.

I love the contrast of the dark wood floors and the white walls and beams.

If the wood is kept dark, it’s a good idea to incorporate large windows for natural light and white or light walls (unless you like dark interiors!)

I’m not a fan of taxidermy as decor, but that door opening to the yard is pretty fantastic!

Beautiful light stone and natural wood floors make this barn conversion quaint and pretty.

I think the photo above and below are from the same barn.  I don’t know if I could live on concrete floors, but I like the white plank walls and the rustic furnishings.

Okay, this may not be for everyone, but how amazing would it be to be able to keep watch over and observe your animals while going about your daily household duties!

So pretty in every way!  The large windows, vaulted ceiling, and character-rich hardwood floors are so pretty.

The barn exteriors are often just as beautiful as the interiors!

Chip and Joanna’s Fixer Upper Magnolia House

Fixer Upper’s B&B The Magnolia House

I’ve only caught a few episodes of Fixer Upper but the ones I saw I really liked. Then a photo of the Magnolia House caught my attention, and that’s what led me to discover that it’s a bed and breakfast owned by the couple.

Loving the shiplap – as we featured in a post last week!  The chandelier in the living room is a nice touch too.
Shiplap abounds!  And those teal cabinets! I really like them.
Iron canopy beds are so romantic.
I really love this space, which I imagine is the lobby.

  • We are with Belgium

Heartbroken is the best way to describe how I feel about what happened in Belgium. Why all the hate? Life is such a beautiful thing.  To honor Belgium today, I want to focus on the beauty of Belgium and it’s people. The property below was painstakingly restored over the course of 11 years. Vaucelleshop is a Flemish Estate dating back to 1275 and is comprised of seven historic buildings dating back from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Enjoy the beauty below:

I’m not sure which building is which,  but they started restoration with the 1876 farmhouse, where grain was stored above the living spaces.  The property is comprised of 11 acres.
Understated elegance is the epitome of Belgian style.
    That staircase is gorgeous.
The mix of antique furnishings and artwork makes the home even more special.
I love how Europeans bring the outdoors in and vice versa.
The kitchen was actually a former pig barn!
Those floors might be worth the extra effort it would take to clean them.
So beautiful.  Read and see more at the blog where I found these photos, A Thoughtful Eye

    Barn inspired homes.

Living in a barn might not sound all that appealing, but these spaces below may just change your mind!
This barn looks modern and rustic! It’s simply gorgeous.
With large windows, tall ceilings, and a touch of the barn indoors, this space takes living in a barn to a whole new level!
Not interested in it looking so much like a barn inside? This upgrade could do it! I like how they are using the beams to define the barn like living, but still keep it updated everywhere else.
Would you live in a renovated barn?
Perfect!!! Woodshop downstairs, live upstairs, couldn't be better. Gotta get building.:
    I would!!
  • Barn Inspired Details in the Home

Barn Inspired Details in the Home

My parents have always had dreams of converting a barn into a home.  Like my parents, most of us probably don’t have the means to live in a gorgeously restored barn, it is at least possible to bring a little bit of the barn into your home.

Barn doors are something I’ve been seeing more and more of lately, and they aren’t just for rustic, country homes either.   Depending on the door’s treatment and hardware, they can even look chic and elegant.

The walls and door in stark white contrasts with the ceiling beams and hardware, which creates a clean, crisp look.
I also love it when the doors’ original patina is left in tact.\
The hardware is just as gorgeous as the doors! Nowadays its not as hard to find options when it comes to barn door hardware. Whether you want it to blend in or stand out, the hardware makes a major difference once installed.

You know my love for white, and white can keep the look sophisticated while still giving a nod to the barn. If you are not a rustic person but still love the barn door look this might be the best option for you! It still looks modern and classy here. I’m not sure if this one has the sliding door hardware on it or not, it looks more like it’s from a garage.

  • To have a space for dreaming and solitude…

To have a space for dreaming and solitude…

You know how some people get all of their energy from being around other people, and how other people need “alone time” to energize? Well, I’m definitely one of the later. I grew up on an almost 200 acre farm on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, so being alone and outside was a part of my daily life and something I really took for granted. Obviously, living in NYC for 3 years I never experienced that, and though I loved it – I never truly felt unwound. I have found a happy in between where I am now, but looking at these gorgeous retreats makes me long for a hidden spot in nature where I can go and decompress.

What do you do or where do you go when you need to decompress and unwind?

    so, so, so pretty

    perfect

    and in France
