Beautiful and Classic interiors: Interior design by Kate Marker

Kate Marker Interiors blends the old and the new

I’m having a serious designer crush on Kate Marker Interiors.  As I’m sure many of you know, raising a toddler adds serious chaos to your life, both mentally and physically.  The constant picking up of toys on top of being there 24/7 to tend to your little one’s beck and call can be draining.  While there are many moments of joy to fill you back up, you also need an environment that decompresses, and for me nothing does that like a soothing, clean and serene space.  I think Kate Marker’s interiors do just that.

Having a sleek and functional entryway helps you leave the day’s stresses at the door and helps prevent it when you’re trying to leave for the day! I LOVE the built-n cupboards and drawers

As an order and organization junkie these bookshelves are such a sigh of relief.  I love the overhead lighting via the gold sconces too.  Using the shelves as a sort of gallery space for art is clever too!

Nothing like a crisp white bathroom

Peppering you house with meaningful vignettes is a beautiful way to decorate.

Normally I don’t go for monochrome spaces but this dusty blue is so beautiful

There is a soothing Shaker quality to this hall

An intimate and light-filled seating area in the bedroom is a happy refuge

    Modern Rustic Inspiration

Growing up on a farm, I feel at home in a rustic interior.  That being said, I also like interiors that are uncluttered and have very clean lines.  One doesn’t easily find a straight line in nature, so in my eyes blending straight, clean lines with natural organic elements is an art form.  Here are some interiors that I think perfectly blend modern with rustic.

Yes. Dark hardwood floors.  Tons of natural light. Textured wide wood plank ceilings. Sliding barn doors. YES.

I think this is Meg Ryan’s kitchen.  Love all of the white and wooden beams.

You can also successfully incorporate bright colors in a neutral palette.  I’d personally use the brights as accents or pops of color.

Man oh man.  I’d be getting dirty A LOT just to spend more time in this bathroom.  Pepple tile on the floor, copper tub, wide wood plank walls, exposed brick….!!

This bedroom is styled to the hilt but I’m a sucker for a pretty bed.  The headboard brings in texture and an organic sensibility, while the window casings and moldings create a tailored look.

Are my stables just outside to the right?  That’s what I’d expect if this were my foyer. Exposed wood beams, stone floors, a mirrored wall..that amazing neutral and monochrome oriental rug!!

Tired of the same old wainscoting and paint and wallpaper?  Consider shiplap or wood plank walls for a unique and rustic look.  The straight diagonals, verticals, and horizontals keep this hall and staircase crisp and clean.

    A Modern Clutter-Free Home

    Modern and Clutter-Free

Do I have your attention?  Who doesn’t want a modern clutter-free home that reflects your family’s passions, memories, and lifestyle. The house below is work of designer Shirley Meisels of MHouse. The family purchased the 1940s 2,200-square-foot home after it had been gutted and had a two story extension added.

Don’t let looks fool you, the furniture was selected to be durable and withstand kids.

The home is also adorned with large-scale photos of the couples travels.

The homeowners were adamant about having cozy furnishings that still had modern lines and easy-to-clean fabrics.

The designer also included lots of storage via baskets and double-duty furnishings.

    Modern Farmhouse

Talk about bright and airy!  The overall white walls in this home and amazingly high ceilings say anything but dark old farmhouse.  I would have loved to see images of this home prior to the renovation.  The house is in New South Wales.  The couple fell in love with it’s character and decided to give it a modern coastal feel while paying homage to it’s farmhouse roots.  I’ll stop talking and let it speak for itself.

    Glamorous Industrial apartment

The apartment below is a fresh mix of industrial style meets glamorous.

It comes from Heart Home magazine

“From the studio of Jaime Beriestain, this renovated apartment celebrates its industrial roots but has more than a touch of added luxury thrown in. It was originally an office but after its sympathetic transformation into a sophisticated living space it now has a warm, timeless and contemporary ambiance. ”

Love all of the natural light in this space, the neutrals are a breath of fresh air too.

The kitchen is a bit dark for me, but I still appreciate it.

The clean lines and copper make this bathroom glamorous even though other elements are very industrial.

How great is all of that exposed brick?

Penny tile was a major thing in the 20th century and although you don’t find it in many homes now, it isn’t as retro as most people make it out to be. Used correctly, I think it can be very modern!

Out East: Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons

Book Review: Out East Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons

I have the pleasure today of reviewing Out East Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons by Jennifer Ash Rudick and photographs by Tria Giovan.  Though I lived in NYC for many years I never made it out to the Hamptons.  Obviously I’d heard of it and knew it as a summer retreat for many New Yorkers.  Aside from being personally invited to the over 30 distinctive houses and gardens featured in this book, I can’t imagine a more comprehensive and beautiful way to really get to know the Hamptons than this robust, beautifully printed book.

Here’s a great summary from the publisher, Vendome:

“Cool breezes, miles of pristine beaches, and vast, open farmland have long attracted visitors to Long Island’s South Fork, known worldwide as “The Hamptons.” Residents in picturesque seaside communities from Southampton to Montauk are calling upon world-class designers to fine-tune their visions, giving rise to a fresh design vernacular: homes that are testaments to what can be achieved when inspired by the natural beauty of a unique locale—and when imagination is one’s only limitation.

Out East captures the enduring appeal of shingled houses, modernist oceanfront designs, artists’ compounds, and Montauk surf shacks. Jennifer Ash Rudick, a long-time Southampton resident, leads an insider’s tour of more than 25 houses, cottages, and pool houses. Tria Giovan, a Sag Harbor–based photographer, captures extraordinary gardens, verandas, lakeside pavilions, farmhouses, and converted barns.” via

Below are some of my favorite photos from the book.

“Despite the bold-faced names who have made their mark, a surprising thread of rusticity and relaxation runs through many of the Hamptons’ most appealing properties—which is precisely what makes the collection presented in the book so intriguing.”

If you are looking to treat yourself or a friend, this book is a no-brainer.  For me it’s an escape on a warm afternoon after putting my son down for a nap!  It can be purchased anywhere books are sold.

Modern kitchen: A modern spin on Shaker style in this stunning kitchen

    Modern Kitchen

This kitchen caught my eye instantly.  I love the clean aesthetic of Shaker style, but I also love the finishes and materials in modern design.  This kitchen from DeVol marries the two.  You’ll also be surprised to know that this modern kitchen isn’t in LA or the Hamptons, it’s in the Hertfordshire countryside of England.

    Modern Kitchen

The pale herringbone parquet with a limed finish are probably my favorite part of the space. I also really like the contrasting island and cabinetry.

    Modern Kitchen

Even though this kitchen has a cool, calm rustic feel, it is in the coach house of a Victorian family home.

    Modern Kitchen

As you can tell, light plays a huge factor in the space.  The understated pendants don’t take away from the amazing natural light from the skylights.

    About the Economy Line

Cabinets Quick! has mastered the art of high-end cabinetry, using and testing numerous materials over the years in order to find the perfect combinations. We have now concentrated our efforts on finding ways to make our high quality cabinets available to a larger audience, trimming costs where we could without decreasing the overall integrity of the product. Imported Chinese plywood is a popular choice among large cabinet retailers due to it’s low cost and the ability to tote the plywood name. But this material often comes with no warranty and lacks consistency in overall quality, two factors Cabinets Quick! feels is not worth the difference in price. Instead, we opted to stay with a domestically sourced White Melamine, a material option used even in the finest homes. Our melamine contains a durable 90lb Particle Board core, and we truly believe its relative strength and reliability overshadows the “non-plywood” stigma. Instead, we opted to save consumers money by switching to comparable off-brand European hardware and streamlining the cabinet construction process by removing certain upgrades. The end result: a product that gives consumers the best value for dollars. In simpler terms, our cabinets lines can be compared to a standard theater versus a luxury theater. Additional options like food delivery and reclining chairs are available for an enhanced experience, but both theaters offer what really counts: the same movie on the same screen.
At Cabinets Quick!, we realize there are many choices of cabinet resellers and distributors. Whether in the kitchen, bathroom, utility or other usable space, Cabinets Quick! offers a variety of solutions and dynamic environments that reflect your personal style. We make it especially easy to buy cabinets online in an easy-to-assemble, ready-to-install arrangement (Quick Ship). Visit our website for additional information and to view examples of our work.
Cabinets Quick! are located at 1742 North Case Street, Orange, CA 92865 and serve many states across the country.
