Outside In: The Gardens and Houses of Tichenor & Thorp

One of my favorite books from 2017, hands down – Outside In by M. Brian Tichenor and Raun Thorp with Judith Nasatir. Outside In combines two loves of mine, interiors and gardens.

A little teaser before we begin?

    From the publisher

“Deeply fluent in the Mediterranean and American vernaculars and the modern forms of the California Tradition, Tichenor & Thorp design exceptional properties that integrate large-scale residences and luxurious gardens and landscapes into a singular, unified vision: house and landscape imagined as one complete expression for a given site and particular client. The duo traverses the spectrum of periods and styles to craft beautifully realized, finely choreographed, highly appropriate living environments that resonate with individuality and precedent. Featured projects include a Spanish-inflected courtyard house and garden in Las Palmas that spectacularly frames the palm trees and the mountains; a Bel Air estate and grounds tinged with English and French influences; a Newport Beach hilltop hideaway that evokes a Portuguese quinta; a Provençal bastide and surrounding gardens transplanted to the côte sud that is Rancho Santa Fe; a Pasadena retreat inflected with John Soane–inspired details; a renovated Harwell Hamilton Harris house in Holmby Hills with a cruciform plan and corresponding gardens of individual character; two luxe contemporary Manhattan apartments; and a modern mountain getaway at the foot of the Tetons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.”

Dreamy right?  I just realized Leo snuck his hand in this photo!

The image above is from my favorite home that is featured, a “modern mountain getaway at the foot of the Tetons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.”  I have come to that section of the book over and over again.

I always love a good home library, and there are many in Outside In

One day I hope to have a studio where I can paint again, as I majored in illustration.

Outside In is a magical book that I can’t recommend enough – it will surely be one of your favorites!

*disclosure: I received a copy of Outside In courtesy of the publisher to review, but the opinions above are my own and genuine!

    Glamorous Interiors

It is always such a treat when I’m introduced to an interior designer whose work I haven’t seen before. It doesn’t happen very often, which is why I’m really excited to share with you Schuyler Samperton. She’s an LA based designer with a cool modern twist on traditional decorating. If you love glamorous interiors, I’m sure some of you do know her work – and even if you’ve seen it before, I imagine it’s just as beautiful to look at the second…, third…, fourth time around…

Pops of pink and turquoise balance out the visual heaviness of the dark wood beams

I would never think to put together that rug that table, with those curtains and that striped chair.  It’s a very unexpected blend, and I like that it looks like the furnishings and decor was collected over time as opposed to items purchased just to match.

The two below images are from the home of model Carolyn Murphy, which was featured in March’s vogue!

    Those wood floors are heaven!

Mix and match pattern and color from Turnstyle interior design firm

Baby Leo isn’t in the mood to allow me to sit here and write for very long, so I have to keep this post brief.  These spaces from Turnstyle don’t need much said on their behalf – they speak for themselves!

I actually featured this glamorous kitchen recently following it’s reveal in Domino.

    Such a cool hip nursery!

Well, sorry I had to keep it brief. What do you think of Turnstyle’s interior design style?

  • Interior Designer Lori Pepe – Lunché : Relaxed and Beautiful

Interior Designer Lori Pepe – Lunché : Relaxed and Beautiful

The portfolio of Berkeley, CA interior designer Lori Pepe – Lunché evokes several adjectives: relaxed, unstuffy, warm, welcoming, and refreshing. All very good things. Here are a few of my favorite rooms by Lori.

White bedding…I think white bedding is my favorite.  I have lots of printed linens, but I always think my bedroom looks prettiest when my bed is done in all whites…

I adore this bathroom.  The cool slick marble contrasting with the branch sconces and decor is glamorous, but not too overt.

The small Berkeley kitchen below is full of cool storage solutions

How cool are those utensil holders?  I’ve never seen anything like them before.

Check out Lori’s fab blog, Design Salon.

  • An up-and-coming interior designer you must check out

An up-and-coming interior designer you must check out

House Beautiful had an exciting article in the Dec/Jan 2010 issue called “The Next 20 the Next Wave,” which showcased 20 designers their editors picked for keeping an eye on. Danielle Fennoy was one of them and I think you guys will really appreciate her beautiful, practical, fuss-free design sense – and her philosophy that design is not only for the privileged, but “good design should be accessible to everyone.” I agree.

The perfect bedroom – pretty and serene

The above are from a West Village apartment.
“The goal of this project centered on accentuating and filtering the light, restoring the original character of the building, adding modern conveniences, and making the place look and feel like home. In this case, the floors became the most major transformative feature of the project. Instead of staining them, we chose to “whitewash” them with a hint of blue tinting. Although each room has a specific mood and function, the continuous blue floor became a unifying feature throughout the entire apartment.”

I love the bedroom in this one too, modern, yet still warm and pretty.

The above two are from a midtown apartment.
“With an open living/dining space and closed kitchen at one end, the goal of the project was ultimately about “defining” space without putting up physical walls. In order to achieve this, we created more functional and intimate zones that created an open kitchen with peninsula and nearby dining area.”

The amazingly large kitchen above from a Lower East Side apartment.
“In addition to giving the place an overall “vintage chic” aesthetic to go with her collection of vintage furniture and barber’s accessories, we also changed how the space would feel and function. What was once a closed eat-in-kitchen became a large open kitchen with lots of storage, a dining peninsula, and views of the living room, terrace, and the gorgeous city beyond.”

This shot is from a Chelsea apartment.
“This was previously a segmented studio alcove apartment…. a unifying color scheme ties it all together. All these elements really made the space look and feel spacious while still providing the necessary functions of a modern day NYC apartment.”

What do you think of her style? You can see more and read her philosophy on her company site, Revamp.
