5 Crucial Tasks To Get Your Home Ready For Fall

    Cozy Interior Updates:

Nothing can make the onset of cold weather more pleasant then fall decorating. Add warmth and comfort to your home’s interior by changing out lightweight summer decor for cozier fall items. Consider adding softer, thicker blankets, decorative pillows in faux furs, velvets, and chunky yarns, and warm-colored accents. You can also adjust your lighting to create a cozy ambiance with warmer tones. Warm-tone lightbulbs can create a candlelight-like atmosphere. I even flip a rug over to the higher-pile side once colder weather sets in.

    Weatherproof Your Doors and Windows:

Seal (caulk or insulate) any gaps or cracks around doors and windows to stifle drafts and heat loss. Use weatherstripping or caulk to fill gaps, and consider even consider adding draft stoppers at the bottom of doors. This helps keep your home warm, reduces heating bills, and is better for the planet. Search for other places in your home that could be leaking cold air. We had a light switch plate by our sliding glass door that was leaking cold air!

    Inspect and Clean Your Gutters

Falling leaves in red and yellow may be pretty on the trees and ground, but these beauties can quickly clog your gutters and downspouts. Overflowing gutters can cause water damage and potential structural issues (just look in the corner of my office ceiling). Clean out all leaves and other grit and make sure they are in good working order and sturdy. Even better? Consider installing gutter guards to reduce future maintenance.

Service Your Heating System and Fireplace

Before the cold weather sets in, have your heating system professionally serviced, or service it yourself if you perform your own maintenance. This includes cleaning or replacing filters, checking for any potential issues, and ensuring it’s running efficiently. A well-maintained system will keep your home warm, save on energy costs, and the hassle of dealing with inconvenient repairs.

    Fall Yard Cleanup

Rake leaves, trim bushes, and prepare your garden for winter. I like to leave any stalks or stems with seeds to dry and provide food for the birds. Then I prune them in the Spring prior to any new growth taking over. If you prune in the fall, remember to prune bushes before any freezes or else frozen water can split branches. Clean and store or cover outdoor furniture, equipment, or statuary. Drain and store garden hoses to prevent freezing and splitting. These tasks help maintain the curb appeal of your home and prevent potential damage.

Preparing your home for the fall using these five steps will ensure your home is comfortable, energy-efficient, and well-maintained during the fall season and into the winter.

And yet another example of how unexpected color freshens up Thanksgiving decor.  I love the addition of the pink mums!  Without them it would be a pretty, but rather ho-hum porch.

  • Preparing your home for Fall

    Preparing your home for Fall

It’s almost that time of year again! As much as I like fall, I’m sad that before we know it summer will be over. For some reason it didn’t really feel like summer much this year. I know I’m probably alone in this, but I love heat and even humidity. With the odd weather on the east coast we only got short spurts of heat. The stores are slowly switching over to fall items and I thought I’d share some of the things I’m eyeing for a fall transition in our home!

Personally I don’t consider summer over until the end of September. So I’ll be waiting until then to implement some of these changes, but based on where you are you may be able to get started sooner.

Candles. Make a candle vignette for your dining room table.  Light them every night at dinner.  Have fun picking out some candles and holders you really love and love looking at every evening.  Unscented is best.  I place mine on a mirrored tray for added light.

Throws.  Nothing says comfy to me like a chunky wool or FAUX fur throw.

Textured pillows.  You don’t really want to pile up the fuzzy pillows during summer, but fall is a great time to start putting out your textured pillows.  I’ve been wanting a mongolian lamb pillow for a while now.

Books Grab some books to curl up to! A Place Called Home is going to be released in  October and I think it’s going to be a coffee table keepsake!  I love having some inspiration at my fingertips and curling up on the couch while sweetums watches TV.

Tom Scheerer Decorates is an absolute feast for the eyes.  I didn’t want it to end and will be pouring over it often this fall and winter.  I’ll be sharing more from it later.

Thanksgiving decorating with candles and objects in nature

Just a bit more inspiration before my favorite holiday…yum!

Love this combo of different leaves, seeds, and pumpkins.

Branches are always dramatic – in a good way

I also love white pumpkins.  Thanksgiving suffers from orange and brown overload sometimes

Everything home decor is warm mixed metals these days, so simply silver, copper, or gold leafing some stones, or painting pumpkins with a glitzy paint will add a lot of glam to your decor.

Getting cozy inside when it’s stormy out…

As I’m sure you all know by now, here on the East Coast we are all bracing for Sandy to hit. Schools are closed, offices are closed, and transit is at a halt. There’s no where to go but to stay home, and why not make it as cozy and comfy as possible?

I’d love to know where this house is
We were without power for a whole week this summer, so we’re bracing for the worst this time, and have gathered up all of our candles and filled all of our pots with water.
Nothing says cozy like marshmallows and cocoa.
And of course, park yourself in front of the fire if you are lucky enough to have one…
    How do you get cozy?

  • Welcome Autumn

    Welcome Autumn

We spent the weekend in NYC where it was 77 on Saturday.  Now here in MD it’s 56 and honestly feels even cooler.  The cloudy sky and yellow leaves only add to the atmosphere of fall.

Autumn is here! Fireplace decorating ideas

Fall is officially here. Though I would pick warm weather over cold weather any day, I still think fall is my favorite season. I love a fireplace, a chunky knit throw, and just the general “coziness” of the season. So I thought it’d be a good time to bring on the fall decorating inspiration!

Try holding on to a little bit of nature even when it’s receding outside, by decorating the mantel with display boxes of interesting branches, pods, and other natural objects.

I really like the dramatic look of branches in a vase.

We have a wood burning insert, a pellet stove, and an electric fireplace in our house. Between the three of them they really keep the place cozy. I have to say the electric fireplace is the easiest to keep clean – no ashes!

I like the look of bookshelves framing a fireplace. Just add a chaise and or a comfy chair and you have a reading nook.
