    Living with Less

As most of you know, clutter can make your overall home decor design seem a little off. If you feel like the amount of things in your home are not showing the true value of the design that you want in your home, maybe it’s time to live with less.
Decluttering can be a huge task that seems quite overwhelming, especially for those who have a hard time letting things go. My suggestion for those who are struggling is to do one room! It’s amazing how one room can boost your motivation and really show you what decluttering can do.
First, start with a plan! What is your style, your color scheme, and your purpose for the room. Now take everything out of the room. If you need to paint or do any big changes, now is the time. Once the room is exactly how you want it empty, add one piece at a time.

Just because you want a simpler room, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! Make sure you add your personality in it, but do it in a way that doesn’t involve a lot of small pieces that will need to be cleaned, dusted, moved, and rearranged later.

You might be surprised when you feel like the room is complete, how many pieces you have left! Here’s the decision you’ll have to make. Either get rid of everything you didn’t put back in the room, or go through it and decide what to keep and what to throw or give away. But whatever you do – don’t put it back in the room you just finished!
For rooms that require a lot more things to be kept. Consider closed storage with drawers and cabinets that you can’t see through. It will create that sense of less clutter while maintaining the items you need to live.

Inspiration for a small home office

I’m lucky that I finally now have a dedicated room in my home to serve as my office, but I wasn’t always so fortunate. I’ve worked in home office arrangements that include the laundry closet of my NYC apartment, at a secretary desk by my bed, and behind the sofa in a nook of my last one bedroom apartment.

If you need a dedicated workspace in your home but don’t have a room to serve as a home office, never fear…we’ve got lots of small home office ideas and tips for you below…

Even a nightstand can serve as a desk in tight spots.  A hall or foyer with unutilized square footage might just work as a home office with the right desk.

I love this ode to the traditional secretary. A glossy finish makes it fit in with the rest of the fancy space.  If this is too traditional for you, their are many, many modern secretary desks to be found.

An oldie but a goodie.  Convert a closet into your office!  The genius behind this idea is that you can close the office doors and hide your office when your work is done.  Install vertical storage solutions like the rod with hooks, and use a sconce for lighting to save valuable desk storage.

Don’t worry if you can’t “hide” your office in a closet.  Just give your work space the same thoughtful consideration as you would any other room in your home.  Choose a color scheme, matching accessories, art, etc.  If you office is out in the open it will be important to keep it tidy!

Another office in a closet.  Notice how well utilized the shelves are with containers and bins to keep things organized.  This clever creative even stores his/her sewing machine there!

An unutilized wall in a living room or bedroom can not only give you a workspace but also add to the beauty of your home if you carefully consider that your furniture and accessories complement the room it’s sharing.

I hope you’ve found these small office ideas inspiring!

  • Living with a Loft

    Living with a Loft

When I was apartment hopping, I always pictured myself living in one with a loft. Just the thought of it gave me so many design ideas that I probably wouldn’t know where to start. Now with the tiny home living you see a bunch of little lofts with bedrooms and I wonder, how would I have decorated my loft apartment?
Since the loft is usually visible to the rest of the apartment, would I get frustrated with always having a view of it and keeping it clean for when guests come over?

Or maybe I could love it being up and away from the rest of the world.
Would I keep the same design style and color scheme throughout the apartment so it didn’t look choppy?

Beams have been recycled as structural support for the mezzanine where there's a family room (with a lovely wicker swing!) and study. Love the stairs and the multi-angled ceiling as well.:

If it was partially hidden, would I create it as a little getaway?

What would you do with a loft?

  • When Street Art Meets Home Decor

Incorporating street art in your home decor might not be something you might have thought about when decorating your home, but you might just be pleasantly surprised at how gorgeous some of these street art inspired rugs are:

I love the hues in this rug and can totally picture it in my home! They have so much texture to them and really give off a quality street art style and feel.

Although this might not be your first choice in a rug style – the color scheme really makes you think about how you could incorporate them in your home with mix matching materials and colors. Bazaar Velvet did a great job of mixing art and home decor in these rugs!

What are your favorite things about these rugs?
